Use of the name "Raspberry Pi"

Thu Jul 07, 2016 4:15 pm

Heey guys,

I was wondering what the regulations are concerning the use of the name "Raspberry Pi".
For a company I want to setup I would like to use Raspi<suffix> (like; RaspiServer, RaspiBox, you get the idea).
I'm not going to use the Raspberry Pi logo and I add a copyright link to raspberrypi.org
I will use it for a Raspberry Pi-only colocate hosting company.
Is this allowed?
Please let me know.

I already read this and it states:

You may not:
(i) use the Raspberry Pi Marks as part of your company name, company logo or product name;

However I don't know if I can use a of part Raspberry Pi (Raspi).

I think you need to consult a lawyer. This site gives some excellent technical advice, but does not specialise in pro-bono legal advice. I'm sure the law is complicated enough for lawyers to get away with charging their fees.

Or try it and wait for the letter from RPF's legal team....

Surely they can't ban the use of Raspi, what about products for people who need a throat lozenge? Eventually someone will want to call that Raspi, especially if made available in various fruity flavours. But why should they be more concerned with the use of Raspi than Pi? Instead of Raspi Colocation Service, you could just call it The Pi Place. You could even have a slogan that just writes itself: "Come to the Pi Place, we'll make a space for your spare pi."

What ever you end up doing, be prepared for a lot of footwork. It's a royal pain to run around constantly pulling the uSD's and re-imaging with a new OS followed by replacing the uSD and manually power-cycling the Pi every time a customer either pooches their image or wants to change OSes.

Quite so.

The thing about trademarks is to prevent people from passing off their shoddy goods under a the name of a recognized brand. It's all about "product confusion"

If you are using the same name as some one else but selling completely different products then there is no confusion.

So Apple Records (The Beatles) was OK alongside Apple Computers back in the day.

And "raspi" cough medicine would be OK.

Trade marks have to be defended, else you lose them.

Of course all those rules are out the window if you try to use the name "Olympics" in your business name: http://articles.latimes.com/2009/oct/16 ... ics-name16 . Or even just the word: http://www.cnet.com/news/on-the-word-bl ... -bowl-ces/ .

If they trademarked it, they could.

IP law is a specialty. You really need to spend the money to talk to a lawyer specializing IP law.

Yeah, I forgot to mention, if the guys defending their trade mark have an infinite amount of money you are doomed. :)

The foundation does defend its trademark via legal
means often enough. You will need professional
legal advice , there is no way around it.
