Voltage warning fades in and out

Sat May 21, 2016 12:41 am

I'm driving my pi 3 with a 5v 3a power supply as evolved but the little rainbow square will pop in and then fade out over and over. Is there any possible way to fix this short of replacing the power supply?

Replace the USB cable with one with a better (smaller number == thicker) gauge.

reply to kruuth on Voltage warning fades
The reason seems to be insufficient microUSB plug connection, thinner cable or Power Supply.
Please try to check voltage by a multimeter then you can find what is wrong and your solution.

Yep that was it. Changed out the cable and it worked perfectly. Thank you.

Glad to hear it. From your original description, it looked like your PSU should be able to keep the voltage up (you aren't going to drawing anywhere near its rated capacity), so the low voltage indicator was likely to be the cable.

Poor PSUs and cables have been an issue for Pis going back to the beginning. Fortunately, you can now get decent PSUs and cables a lot more readily than you could 4 years ago, mostly due, I think, to the roaring success of the Pi.
