Launching .x86?

Fri Aug 17, 2012 11:30 pm

I have a app i use on my other linux boxes that I can launch ./program.x86 and when i attempt to do the same on Debian RasPI i get an error that says:

bash: ./program.x86: cannot execute binary file

Is there any way around this? The program is very light weight (103 kb)

Thank you,
Dixe

There's no x86 chip on the Raspberry Pi. Try running the ARM version of your program instead.

There is no ARM version. Is there a way to run this app another way?

qemu can emulate the X86 I think - ut you'll need to investigate further, I've never tried it.

Actually, DosBOX might work depending on the age of the program you want to run.

What is a x.86 ?
That is not a filetype, is it ?

Some pointers :
There are executables for DOS/ Windows . Those are 99% x86 executables. (ending in .exe or .com )
There are executables for Linux. They are often also only x86 executables.
(no ending ! Linux recognizes executables by their executable flag and other details )

If you have sources , you can recompile your Linux app for the Pi.

You cannot run a x86 app directly on the Pi. And no windows and DOS apps AT ALL.
WINE doesn't work , for example.

If you have too much free time :
Investigate qemu-user and using WINE with it. Dietmar has done a proof-of-concept. ( slow ?)
Else install Windows/DOS/FreeDOS on qemu.(Extremely slow) Or use Dosbox. (slow)
