Raspberry arrived with a problem

Fri Aug 17, 2012 1:45 pm

My Raspberry has just arrived, but with a blank SDHC. I ordered one with preloaded O/S. I downloaded 2012-07-15-wheezy-raspbian.zip and Win32 DiskImager and after several attempts managed to write the O/S to SDHC. Then I realized that my mouse is USB, but the keyboard is DIN. So I inserted the SDHC into the slot on Raspberry, plugged in the power and connected it to my TV on HDMI4. Absolutely nothing. Even without a keyboard and mouse I still expected some form of logon screen, so something is not right. I noticed this line in the Config file but I don't know what it means.

# uncomment if you get no picture on HDMI for a default "safe" mode
#hdmi_safe=1

Cany anyone help, please?

Thanks,

Alex

Simply remove the # before hdmi_safe=1

Thank you all. I now have display, which shows some worrying messages. I have taken a picture of the screen and I am attaching it below. Without a keyboard I cannot take it further, but not being able to find Root, looks as if this is not going to work.

What do you think?

Thanks again,

Alex

Unfortunately, the attached picture is too small to be able to read anything.

It is going to throw up some lines that look like errors but are actually non important things such as trying to mount drives that are not attached

Go grab a USB keyboard from the local supermarket, you can get them for about £4 in asda ;)

1) I could read it - with a magnifying glass... I keep one handy these days, as everything is fine print nowadays.

2) Do they really sell USB keyboards in grocery stores in the UK? They don't do it here. In fact, I don't know of anyplace locally (other than a dedicated computer store, of which we have a few - but it is going to be super-expensive there) that I could walk in and buy a keyboard.

And speaking of "here" and "there", I get the impression that Alex isn't either in the US or the UK.
And some folks need to stop being fanboys and see the forest behind the trees.

(One of the best lines I've seen on this board lately)

Well for one, it's not booting up properly.
Keyboard won't really help you there as it's not actually getting into Linux.
Try and write the img again and see if it changes

Dunno if anyone else tried this, but under winders and with firefox, I just used Ctrl & + to zoom in on the pic, no magnifying glasses needed....

There was a problem reading SD status register.

Either the SDCard is corrupt, or the power supply is not supplying enough voltage.

You could try reimaging the card (the downloads page probably has a newer image anyway).
You could try another power supply.

Keyboard problem can be fixed by using a USB to PS/2 adapter - http://www.amazon.co.uk/NEWLink-USB-Key ... B001FB6WMS

Yea I get all my cheap mice and keyboards from asda, an optical mouse is about £2-3 last time I looked, great for things like the Pi

I get that message at boot (sometimes, always, or on certain cards; I have not checked) but it never causes the boot to fail. Is it actually a problem?

Code: Select all

mmc0: SDHCI controller on BCM2708_Arasan [platform] using platform's DMA
mmc0: BCM2708 SDHC host at 0x20300000 DMA 2 IRQ 77
mmc0: problem reading SD Status register.
Waiting for root device /dev/mmcblk0p2...
mmc0: new high speed SDHC card at address 1234
mmcblk0: mmc0:1234 SA08G 7.42 GiB
 mmcblk0: p1 p2
EXT4-fs (mmcblk0p2): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts: (null)
OP's screenshot says that the fs journal superblock is missing/invalid. I would take that to mean that the card was not imaged correctly.

I am in UK, not that that makes any difference.

I think that Raspberry O/S is not going to work whatever I do. Firstly, Win32DiskImager starts with an error message, that another application is trying to access "the device" and that I should close all other applications and try again. Nothing else is running. When I get DiskImager on the screen it does not see the Raspbian image file. I have to go to the directory and ask to open "*.*".

When I click on Raspbian Zip file an image file appears, but I cannot save it, so when I start DiskImager that image file is not there.

My inderstanding is that when I click on Raspbian image file the DiskImager should start to work and all I have to do is tell it where to write. I does not.

By the way, I am impressed with the quality of work. I ordered a perspex box for it, so I can see the "mother board". It is a veritable sculpture, except that I wanted a working computer and as yet that it is not.

I appologise for the rant, but I really detest time wasting and that is all I did today.

Best Regards,

Alex

Which flavour of Windows are you running Win32DiskImage on?

Because if it's Vista (spit) Or Windows7 you need to run as administrator.

Then you need to unzip your image before Win32DiskImage will see it.

Just in case you are of the noob end of the spectrum (see sig bellow) there's some help in the wiki

Here http://elinux.org/RPi_Noob_Guide_to_the ... g_an_image ;) get back if you are still lost.

It is supprising how much time you can avoid wasting by doing a bit of reading. ;)

I just love the eponymous acronym.

Try downloading a program called 7zip, use this to open the Raspbian zip file and use the "extract" button, you can tell it where on your PC you want to save it.
It's the .img file you need.

Start Win32DiskImager on its own (as administrator user) then select your extracted .img file by using the navigation to where you saved it.
Then make sure the target drive letter on the right is the correct one for your SD card.
Then let it write.

Thank you Redhawk, Jim JKla and Adlambert. I tried first in WinXP Sp3, then in Win7 and finally in Puppy Slacko 5.3.3 running off a DVD. I downloaded WinZip to WinXP and logged on as administrator. Good job I made a note of user and password when I installed it. If only you gentlemen wrote the instructions that are sent witl each Raspberry none of this would have happened and I would have matched the speed of installation easily achievable by a child of 6
The O/S has downloaded OK and I got as far as the config screen - in the attachment. Without a USB keyboard I could go no further, but it looks good to me.

I shall probably get a wireless keyboard with built in mouse , which will be easier to use without moving my noobian arse out of my chair. Very handy for collecting emails during Coronation Street.

I cannot thank you enough,

Best Regards,

Alex

Be careful what you wish for on keyboards some of the fancier ones have issues with power drawn on the RPi USB ports.

Your best bet is buy a cheap USB keyboard and mouse and a good robustly powered USB Hub.

I have an old Belkin 7 port F5U101 hub the power supply to this is 4 amp I then power the RPi using a USB "A" to micro USB cable ant then connect one of the RPi USB output ports to the Hub using a USB "A" to USB "B" to the "root port" (thats how it's labled on the hub).

The mouse and keyboard and anything else for that matter is plugged into the hub.

This may seem to be rather circular but it means the RPi output is used for data and all the power requirements are supplied by the hub. This includes the RPi.

As for instructions with a supplied RPi all they need is a link to the wiki Noob pages. ;)
