I cannot confirm a performace drop in 4.4.9 - as far as linpack is concened. Others untested.

It isn't how high can you overclock, and what Gflop can you pass at on 4.4.9, it is a comparison between both kernels using the same benchmark parameters, config as a constant. ;)

Run it in 4.1.19 and 4.4.9 and give the following output for both kernels (while running the bench).

Unfortunately linpack results for N=10000 can't be directly compared to those for N=8000. Are you overclocking or setting the CPU governor to performance for your runs?

does "dtoverlay=pi3-miniuart-bt" added to config.txt help the 4.4.9 performance?
We have spotted what looks like unwanted serial interrupts occurring, they stop when that overlay is applied. (enable_uart=1 also seems to fix it).

Neither of those settings were the ones I suggested.

A large number after the ":" that increases rapidly is unwanted. If it is either not present of has a small stable number in, then that is okay.

It appears to have disabled Bluetooth...

No improvement in sdbench:
HDPARM 36.38 MB/s READ 35.33 MB/s WRITE 14.82 MB/s

Improvement in sybench (in line with 4.1.19 results): 114.3685s

Improvement in linpack bench (in line with 4.1.19 results): passed 6.697 Gflops


So does this mean that the BT is causing the degradation? What about the sd_overclock? No good anymore in 4.4.9?

No, not BT directly. There are two uarts, either one can be used by BT, and the other can be used for serial output.
I think the problem is with an unused uart is being left with an interrupt asserted but no interrupt handler to clear it
(but the asserted interrupt does waste CPU). So that is not a problem and should be easy to fix.

The sdcard performance regression does appear to be from an upstream change.
Needs more investigation, but again I'd imagine it will be fixable.

I suspect "dtoverlay=pi3-disable-bt" is also avoiding the issue. Remove that line and you'll probably hit the issue.

I am happy that the error could be narrowed down. At least my Pi could serve as a counterexample.

Yes, rpi-update will get support (I assumed you'd have it in a thread about 4.4.9 kernel).
Or wait a few days for apt-get to be bumped.

Oddly, the ssh session freezes and I can not start another one, but the activity light still flickers.....

Restore backup. I have never had to do a 'apt-get install rpi-update', only 'sudo rpi-update' .

Are we not both on Jessie, linux 4.1.13, pi3? I have no clue what you are doing. I didn't have to do that. :?

What I have here is a brand new Pi 3 with a brand new SD card.

I put Raspbian Lite on it. Version: March 2016 Release date:2016-03-18

Nothing else has been installed on it.

Presumably Lite does not have rpi-update out of the box.

I did do an apt upgrade so now I have :

Everything works, getting a million digits of Pi with gmp-chudnovsky for example.
