Rasp to monitor cable

Thu Aug 16, 2012 4:07 pm

Hi, I want to connect my rasp to a computer monitor, the monitor only has VGA. It's like finding a needle in a haystack, is it so unusual to want to attach to a monitor instead of a tv? If someone could point me to one I would appreciate it, thanks.

You're not alone with wanting to connect to VGA monitors, I assure you.

There are basically two reference designs when it comes to buying cheap HDMI-VGA converters.

The box kind with separate power supply: http://dx.com/p/hdmi-to-vga-video-conve ... 16?item=54
The fat cable without separate power: http://dx.com/p/hdmi-v1-4-male-to-vga-f ... 58?item=38

The general consensus is that only the box kind is to be used as it will not draw power from the Pi (there is a diode on the Pi that can provide 50ma to the HDMI output, but the fat cable requires up to 400ma, thusly killing your Raspberry Pi, in theory---but not for me, just some people)

More info here: http://elinux.org/RPi_VerifiedPeriphera ... y_adapters
{sig} Setup: Original version Raspberry Pi (B, rev1, 256MB), Dell 2001FP monitor (1600x1200), 8GB Class 4 SD Card with Raspbian and XBMC, DD-WRT wireless bridge

Thanks for the reply. I'm hearing seeing bad things about the build quality and ability to do the job with the 'cheaper' one and seen a box type on Amazon for £103! It would be cheaper to buy a little monitor size hd tv at asda. Does anyone have experience of using the box type with a monitor?
My rasp is attached to the back of a monitors vesa holes, very nice bit of kit an independent has made.

Just to check, the rasp can be joined to a hd tv with just a hdmi cable?

Hi
The prob. is that we have numerous CTX 50/60 hz monitors that are as clear as crystal here at work. It seems very wasteful not to use them What cable can (?) be used to connect this to the Pi and would the Pi work?
