Multiple input switch

Hi Guys,
I would like to ask the opinioni of someone that knows PI better than me: i need to have multiple input switch connected to the pi, that will be catch up from python via callbacks and do stuff for each of them.
Which one is the best way to connect them?
Should i have to use resistors?
I'm not so experienced in electricity but I've noticed (with some tests) that if I connect two buttons in some way(don't remember if pull down or pull up) one of them will be triggered automatically without that I push it.. Can you explain this? And how can I make it reliable?
The aim would be to connect real home switches to the pi in order to do stuff and then switch on some lights.
Thanks to everyone!
