How do partitions work with NOOBS?

Sun Apr 24, 2016 6:55 pm

Hi there, I'm looking to dual boot on my raspberry Pi 3 both Raspbian and OSMC. Once I install both via the NOOBS installer; I have a few questions:

1. Do I automatically get the OS menu on boot up to select what OS to boot into or do I have to hold down a key on the keyboard?

2. How do I decide the split of storage? I wish to have a few 100 megabytes of storage free on the OSMC side for addons and such but would like the rest of the available space on Raspbian.

Many thanks to everyone who can help out a soon to be Pi 3 owner!! :)

It would probably be easier to forget about NOOBS and install the OSs on separate sd cards.
The most important leg of a three legged stool is the one that's missing.
It's called thinking. Why don't you try it sometime?

I only plan on using a single SD card. Bought a 32GB and don't intend on buying more when a seconds OS such as OSMC takes up less than a GB.

I have 2 setups cards, ones boot for my hdd raspbian and ones 32gb dual boot raspbian and retropie, with berryboot.

you have to remember to manually adjust the partition sizes using gparted, as "raspi-config" expanding will make one os claim all the free space.

A1: IIRC "multi-booting" NOOBS defaults to the O.S. "last-used" unless you select otherwise during the "installed O.S. selection screen" which is displayed for ~10s**.
A2: Again, IIRC, NOOBS arranges that for you (but you can also request an extra "data partition" - for those that want to share files between two or more installed O.S.'s). There are ways of customising the installs too.****

Still running Raspbian Jessie or Stretch on some older Pi's (an A, B1, 2xB2, B+, P2B, 3xP0, P0W, 2xP3A+, P3B+, P3B, B+, and a A+) but Buster on the P4B's. See: https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_pi/raspiidx.htm
