Can you install Google Chrome on a Raspberry pi 3? I just thought that since Google Chrome needs a 64-bit processor and the Pi 3 has one that it might be able to do it. I know that Chromium can be installed on it from viewtopic.php?t=121195, but I was wondering if the actual Chrome would work. Any suggestions?

Edit: I'm sorry. At the time of writing I didn't understand that the Pi 3 has an ARM64 processor, not an AMD64 one, and Chromium does auto-update as long it is installed as a PPA.

No, I'm afraid only Chromium can be installed on the Raspberry Pi, because the Pi has an ARM processor. Chromium works in almost exactly the same way as Chrome though, so i'd install that.

OK. I hope Google comes out with a Chrome for ARM that doesn't have to be on a smartphone or a Chromebook because it would be useful to have it update itself.

Chromium is the open-source web browser project from which Google Chrome draws its source code. The browsers share the majority of code and features, though there are some minor differences in features and they have different licensing.


I didnt use the same code as you linked. I am able to view Youtube decently in Chromium without the need for OMXplayer overlay taking up the whole screen (rpi-youtube -y).

You shouldn't promote those instructions because they are end of life. V48 is available in the new repo still and you can downgrade like any normal tepo, just ask Google. But the issues in v49 are so small that its not even worth using an older version.

Isnt the newest chromium (V49?) the broken/buggy one?

48.0.2564.82 (which is what the above wget ultimately installs) appears to be very stable, and is a current release 2016 version is it not?

Current release is v50 but its not available in the Ubuntu repos yet. V49 isn't buggy. The only bug I've seen is the one with a blank spot in the right click menu and I don't even see that. I don't see that as a bug, but a minor inconvenience. Anyway, those are the old instructions and won't be updated anymore.

it is a bug, and it is a PITA.

anyways, regarding v48.... (which just released 90 days ago)

I have no intention of updating chromium 48.0.2564.82 any time soon. Considering it is 'stable', and works for youtube, etc.

But please don't give old instructions to new users, let them form their own opinions and they can ask if they want to downgrade. A simple link to my guide without any comment and let them judge for themselves instead of posting instructions which are currently obsolete and will be more so in the future.

And the new repo installation way allows you to downgrade as I've said before, using normal apt features like you would for any other package.

Since you need Android to have Google Chrome, is it possible to install Android on the Raspberry Pi, and if so, can you install Chrome on it?

Android is not a prerequisite for installing Chrome.

Chrome and Chromium are both from the same source code.

You can install Chromium on the Pi.

Android on the Pi is not very good.

Regards Google Chrome Browser it is only supported on x86 CPU and as an App for Android, though there are caveats:

If you have a RPi 2B or 3B install Raspbian and use Chromium Browser ....
....RPi 1 or O install Raspbian and use the included Epiphany.


The other alternative is to buy a x86-64 SBC which can run Windows

If you really want a fast chrome like experience try this
