Is USB chip and/or driver a weak point? (webcams problems)

Fri Aug 10, 2012 2:59 pm

I don't know why but RaspberryPi + webcam is not an easy taks   .

Please see this my post ... 67#p146067.

Now I am fighting with random camera hangs. If anybody have suspicion that ioctl( VIDIOC_DQBUF ); hangs please see this ... SVyNSM45qw little investigation with Gilles - creator of v4l4j library.

Speaking of webcams and rpi - there are a lot of never ending problems :(.

Already I have tested all my 5 rpis, different power suplies, SD cards, powered usb hubs, usb cables (normal and 'powered' ones), OSes, webcams, rpi with and without radiators, rpi inside metal box (to eliminate EMI), usb cables with and without ferrite cylinders (one again EMI), different frame grabbers (fswebcam, motion, v4l4j, ...), ...

I am asking all of you that had problems with webcams and other USB devices (especially those that needs high bandwidth).

Does usb chip or driver is some kind of weak point of RasbperryPi? :?

What do you think?

Thank you,
