Need a cheap media player

I just called allied electronics and apparently the raspberry pis aren't even due to ship till December?!

My xbox just died and I have used it basically every night for the last few years to just watch TV shows on before I go to bed, it's been a few days now, and I am going crazy.

So besides the raspberry pi (which I am keeping my order on), which will take an eternity to get (by that time I bet something else comes out with double the power) what can I get in the mean time to just play video from a USB device.

Without also breaking the bank.

I live in the US. Farnell would be located in the UK right? Also, those two items look somewhat sketchy, not much information, no "brand", not very trustworthy looking.

I've recently acquired two of these best buy easy home dvb-t hd dual to convert our older TVs in holiday home to digital.

They are about the price of a RasPi model A and seem to offer similar media player functionality. Of course, you get a full set of Codecs, a TV tuner, record and play from USB devices. I'm trying to resist tearing open the case to look inside. You don't get to mess with Linux though.

I saw one in a shop in Lodz, but couldn't believe it would be any good at that price (109 zl ~ £20, $30). Checked it out on the web and they get good reviews. Best Buy seems to be a Spanish company.

You know, I work at a bestbuy, and I never knew they had a model without the 1TB hard drive, this is much more affordable, and wow, even plays MKVs? that's insane. I am pretty interested, shopping around now.

If you want even cheaper, you can get the original WDTV (no network support) for $35 or so on ebay.

Both versions are well hacked with homebrew operating systems. I've had my original WDTV since they were they were new with a network dongle running off NFS shares on my PC.

I just bought the new WD Live TV. I think the wifi capability is worth it since ill be able to FTP to is easily. Also I read there is a torrent client. I don't have another extra portable HDD (i need my external on my PC). but assuming I end up liking the way it functions ill trade up to a portable HDD from the flashdrive im about to put in lol.
