Windows RT 8.1 on Rpi idea!

Tue Mar 08, 2016 1:46 am

Hello RPI forum users, i think i have a working idea for windows RT on raspberry pi, to do it i will obtain a copy of windows 8.1 RT and to do that i will buy a surface 1 and then ill get a bootable recovery image copy from it and put it on a micro sd card and try and boot it up! i think it might work in all probability. Thanks for your time! and Bye

jasperturtles,

There is no possible chance that an image of Win RT is going to just magically boot and run on a Pi. Don't waste your time trying.

Lie down until the feeling goes away.
The most important leg of a three legged stool is the one that's missing.
It's called thinking. Why don't you try it sometime?

It's an HAL extension problem, I know that the ABI for it existed in Windows 8 build 8330, but I think that no hardware really used interrupt controller HAL extensions. It would be nice if it's still there(but someone needs to reverse the ABI or get Microsoft to release docs)
The Raspberry Pi doesn't use a GIC, unlike near every other Cortex-A7/A53 piece of hardware.

Well, it won't run on the Pi, but it runs on a Cubieboard or [insert your random not using chips from Broadcom SBC here] using an ARMv7 chips, except the Cortex-A5 and A8(those don't have a GIC by default)

mimi123,
...it runs on a Cubieboard or...
Do you have any links to substantiate that? As far as I can ascertain this is not the case.

Windows RT runs fine on the Cubieboard 2 and on a Sony Xperia tablet.
Can upload screenshots if you really want it(port done with collaboration of kholk and other people at EFIdroid)

A simple link to a HOWTO, blog, post, YouTube video, whatever would do.

In my little google around all I could find was people asking if it was possible and getting the reply that it was not.

Yes but we are talking Raspberry Pi's whch uses a VPU with a ARM CPU attached, the models you mention have a ""traditional"" CPU & GPU layout as did the Surface ARM RT Models

Sent it via PM, note that it was an early picture, where it started for the first time, you can ask for more of them :)

The Pi could have used a GIC like everything else, but everything has a cost(not high in my opinion compared with flexibility)

To be more on topic, that screenshot was with a boot without running the Out of the Box experience, as I didn't have real input at that time

I think that Pi will run windows RT. But, I think we need more details on GPU acceleration, and I don't think we have a compatible bootloader or firmware for raspberry pi. How about make them with other people and build our windows PRT?

Even if you could get full co-operation from Microsoft and the Raspberry Pi Foundation, the man-years of effort required could be put to far, far better use.

ARM Windows RT is end of life as far as MS are concerned, so the effort required would in the end become a stuck in a Time Warp OS

MS are now solely focused on Windows 10 for the various architecture, so Windows 10 Phone would make more sense.........

What if we were to use berryboot? Where you remove the boot part of it and just use the system part.

jasperturtles,

I admire your tenacity. Finally replying here after over a year.

As far as I know what you ask for is still not possible.

And I still can't fathom why you would want to do such a crazy thing.

Windows RT supported Tegra3/4 in the MS Surface, whilst the Nokia Lumia2520 used a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 ARM CPU.

All the above SoCs bear little resemblemce to the BCM28xx SoC.
