Moving from Pi 2 to 3 using same image

Thu Mar 03, 2016 12:40 pm

Hi,

I've just got my Pi 2 in a good state running various data collection apps, SQLite3, Apache etc and am think of up grading to the Pi 3.
I'm running the system from an external Hard drive and booting from an SD card.
I would like to upgrade the Pi2 to 3 without having to re-install all the apps, compilers etc and recompile my apps.

Is it possible to change the Pi2 to Pi3 buy just doing and apt-get update/upgrade and changing the hardware.?

Cheers

Andy

are you in jessie or wheezy ?
but
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
is a good start
making backups before you move will obviously be wise.

it should work for jessie - wheezy less likely

This also works with Ubuntu Mate for the Pi, plus a

Code: Select all

sudo rpi-update
... because this way Ubuntu for the Pi fetches the Foundation's newest Raspbian kernel + firmware.

In the end you can happily exchange the µSD-card between the Pi2 and Pi3. That's great, and the Foundation did a good job in keeping the compatibility.
