Printer support for Rpi

Sun Aug 05, 2012 1:46 pm

I have been trying to install CUPS to provide some text printing from an Rpi. Although the intallation appeared to work using apt, aptitude didnt list it as an installed package afterwards.
Can anyone provide any advice on how providing text printing?

Thanks JOHNBOY44

try again in a console with "apt-get install cups". If it sais, that it's already installed, everything is ok. Otherwise it should give some more details why failing.

I have an HP 6500 E710n-z multifunction printer, and downloaded (via synaptic package manager) HPLIP since I know that that package contains my printer driver.

I used midori ("localhost:631" in the URL field).to access CUPS 1.5.3, and "Administration" and "Find New Printers" correctly recognized my network printer (R_pi connected to router by cable, printer talks to router by wi-fi).. To add this printer I selected "HP" as the "Make" and scrolled down to "HP Officejet 6500 e710n-z hpijs 3.12.6 (en)" and selected "Add Printer" and accepted default options.

It looked like I had added the printer O.K., and I clicked on the maintenance menu and asked the system to print a test page...the printer whirred a bit and spit out a page with the printed message "unable to open the device, quitting", and the error message on the screen was "/usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed". "Foomatic-rip" at the command line => "No printer definition (option '-P <name> ' specified!".

I deleted the printer and added it again using "HP Officejet 6500 e710n-z hpcups 3.12.6 (en)" as the driver. This time the printer did not even awaken, but CUPS reported an error with the message "/usr/lib/cups/filter/hpcups failed".

Is anyone else having success (or failure) with Raspbian printing?

I should mention that I have been using Puppy Linux alpha-4 (currently based on Debian Squeeze) on the R_pi, which has CUPS 1.4.4, and I have added HPLIP for my driver source, and that combination prints fine.

I am also having problems, I am trying to print to a Canon Pixma MP600R. Not too much success adding it as a network printer, so tried via USB. This seemed to add OK and showed status OK but failed on a test print leaving status as idle - "Rendering Completed". During printing the message "no profiles specified in PDD" is shown as the state. Using Midori to access the CUPS adminstration pages on local host the buttons are not displaying correctly, they have a 1/2 cm black boarder, and sometimes the text is missing or obscured.

Changing the browser to ice weasel removes the black borders problem.

I have got the USB connected printer working after doing the following
Turn off printer
Reboot pi
Turn on printer

Under set default options
Colour model changed to CMYK

Tried the same options change on the network connected printer without the reboot etc, and this seems to be working as well
