raspi-config development?

Mon Jan 18, 2016 8:13 pm

I have done a brief investigation into the raspi-config "tool / utility / program". I am a bit confused :)

The repository at https://github.com/asb/raspi-config seems to be out of date, and suggests "Now maintained at https://github.com/RPi-Distro/raspi-config". There are still 25 open issues there.

The repository at https://github.com/RPi-Distro/raspi-config has 3 open issues; one is mine! I have not checked if the older 25 issues are fixed there.

There is a new GUI tool (/usr/bin/rc_gui). It's repository is at https://github.com/raspberrypi/rc_gui. Running "dpkg -S /usr/bin/rc_gui" shows it belongs to package rc_gui, but this package is not found by apt-get. This C program appears to work by calling the original raspi-config.

I would like to help to test and fix the issues with raspi-config (to start with). Can someone clarify my confusion above?

The rc_gui dev sometimes makes changes to raspi-config and keeps them in the rc_gui repo, then they are merged into raspi-config over at https://github.com/RPi-Distro/raspi-config when the rc-gui (not rc_gui) package is updated. There's no rc_gui package because you can't have underscores in debian packages.
The raspberrypi and RPi-Distro organisations on github are both official, so it doesn't really matter where you open the issue, we see it either way. I only ask that people don't open issues like that on the linux and firmware repos.

Hope that explains clarifies some things at least.

Yes, thank you for that. It clears up a lot (including the thought that it is time for an eye-check :) )

I have looked at both lists of issues for raspi-config, and there might be a few that I can address. I might struggle with the GUI as I don't know that sort of coding. More in a bit...

Don't be surprised if there's no reply. There's a new image in the works so new development of things like this is frozen for a while to make sure everything is as tested and stable as it can be.
