I had the same problem on a web interface I'm coding (witch touchscreen), so I used this https://github.com/Mottie/Keyboard (Javascript)
I sadly found nothing to automatically display Matchbox-Keyboard...

Ok thanks, the best i could come up with is A: programming my own os and adding that in. or B: putting it in the tool bar.

Check out Florence ..

sudo apt-get install at-spi2-core
sudo apt-get install florence

I got the information from http://xmodulo.com/onscreen-virtual-keyboard-linux.html, I use it on my touchscreen.
