the forum's editor does not allow image upload, file "too big":
"maximum allowed size is 64 KiB."

please enlarge max image size to at least 512 kB !

+1,
IMHO,
Relying on external sources for larger images can cause lost of details on older posts, when the external source goes offline.

Like for any problem/limitation, there are ways to go around them....
And we all do something like what you are proposing (I use a file sharing site)

That being said,I still agree with the OP, for the simple sake of info preservation.

AFAIK Imgur never deletes your posts.

It would be nice, but you also have to think about the Foundation's servers. I don't know how much space they buy and if they have room for bigger pictures.

Why not? Upload it to some website like Imgur. Put the url in image tags and it looks and behaves as if you uploaded it here.

Also disallow all links to those huge 4K by 4K images that make a mess of the forum display in the browser and are really bad news for mobile users.

Thank you.

in our German phpbb3 forum we have images upload to several (>10) MB image files and everything is fine.

We are working with smaller previews which can be enlarged if one wants to

it's just a simple setting to enable it

Old news trotted out by James. Forum changes remain unplanned.
If they stick with PHPBB3 the underlying cruddy software is never going to improve although the Raspite theme could be less ugly with a better font choice. Hopefully any new theme will be an addition, not a replacement so we can change back to prosilver or Raspite if it turns out ugly.

Not sure why the limit is so small, but my guess would be to reduce storage and serving requirements (big images = big server bandwidth required, not just storage requirements)

? Most certainly planned, have seen some new stuff. Mods have been asked what changes they would like to see. Defo some planning and implementation going on.

Most of the worlds population accesses the internet via their mobile phone or tablet and rely on expensive mobile network providers.

This is a) slow and b) often capped.

A forum like this should not be causing their mobile browsers to download megabytes of useless images.

I am accessing the internet exclusively by PCs and by the Raspi in case of need - never by mobile devices.
Most of my collegues and friends do it the same way like me.

A small preview is working fine for either user, so please stop objecting and cool down your heater.

Turns out that we are the lucky few who have access to such machines and high speed internet. The majority does not yet.

If the small preview is the default then that is all well and good. In my experience that is not the case. At least not on this forum. I'm not even warm yet.

If you don't care about the majority of the worlds population then so be it. Just saying.

About internet speed and performance and usage I can talk just about me and my friends.

About the image size and the server and website performance: try out the link which I provided!

People like Facebook and MS are taking the next 5 billion users seriously. And their slow, limited, unreliable connectivity.

our forum is phpbb3 just like this forum.
I actually doubt that small previews would affect either forum for either images of either sizes.

But let's see what the forum's admins will develop for the future.

I don't know.

My simple point is that if one hits a page on a forum like this from a phone it should not take minutes to download and blow ones data cap.

I have issues with this when roaming around Europe with my phone.

Those links to huge images you find here all the time are a disaster.

I posted a link of several huge sized uploaded images in 1 post which are represented as small-sized previews by default.

So do you have issues?

I bet not.

davenull,
I have no idea how to make my point more clear. Perhaps a large font for the hard of understanding.
