Does max_usb_current work on the Pi Zero?

Sun Dec 13, 2015 2:56 am

I just want to know if I can power a 2.5" hard drive plugged into the Pi without a powered hub like I do on my other systems. It could be a deciding factor on if I buy one for fun.

I don't believe there is any hardware to limit the USB current on the the Pi Zero. The power output is directly connected to the power input, so, as long as your PSU is capable of powering the hard drive plus a couple of hundred mA for the Pi it should work.

Gotta plan that $5 expense carefully.

...and so far as you don't try to run so much power across the board that you overload the traces. The Pi0 has a microUSB power connector and those are, as I understand it, only spec'd to handle up to about 2A.
