Is it safe for the servo

Fri Dec 04, 2015 6:57 am

Hi!
I have this servo: http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/NTYxWDU1Mw==/ ... 4P/$_1.JPG
Name: AR-705 MG.

I want to control it threw my raspberry pi 2.
My question is is it safe to hook up the servo to the rpi2 5v pin or do I need an external source?
I'm using the rpi2 with 700mA.
Thx

Use a multimeter to find out how much current the servo takes in your application, however I wouldn't take the risk - always use a separate supply for the servo.

Okay, are 4 AAA batteries okay (1.5V)??

Maybe, but not for very long. The question can't be answered until you know how much current those batteries can delivery, and how much the servo requires.

Sorry for being annoying, how do I check for the servo how much current it needs?

That's a fairly beefy servo. With no load (just for testing) you can probably run it from the Pi 5V line, but I think you need a bigger PSU than 700mA.

I'd recommend 4 AA cells. AAA have much less capacity.

Connect battery negative to Pi ground. Connect battery negative to servo ground also. Connect battery positive to servo positive. Connect servo control to Pi GPIO.
