The Zero has arrived in NL!

Wed Dec 02, 2015 11:08 am

I ordered two Zero's at the PiHut at launch day and was pleasantly surprised to get those, delivered very fast yesterday and at a price of £4.
I also ordered the PiHut Zero Essential kit, which contains, in a nice can, micro to USB 2 adapter, a Mini HDMI to HDMI adapter and a large choice of GPIO connectors to be soldered in.

I have put the Zero to work this morning, and, it is a Raspberry Pi :lol: The latest Jessie runs fine, but an older uptodate Wheezy also did work fine. Nice to see jessie is again under the 4GB limit!

No need for USB powered hubs, my passive micro usb based hubs do their job. With a USB hub with Ethernet adapter I was able to setup and configure a Zero without even attaching a mouse or keyboard or HDMI display.

And now it runs with just a Wifi adapter, since, with XRDP installed, the desktop and the console via SSH is remote available.

I have to decide how to solder in the GPIO connectors. At least one will get the male version, so it can be connected to a breadboard.

The other Zero is working fine with keyboard/mouse/display.

For the Ethernet-USB hub I inserted a Micro USB to USB 2.0 adapter in the connector:

New entries found in boot/config.txt to enable turbo 1 GHz mode:
core_freq=500
sdram_freq=600
over_voltage=6

What makes the Zero special for me is:
  • Price. Even if the local dealers in Europe will charge at least 3x the $5 price by including two cables and VAT and profit, it still is a bargain.
    Size. This flat design makes it fit in even smaller designs.
    Freedom in GPIO connections. See on the link below for some examples how this can be done, the PiHUT understands this very well by including choices in the Zero Essential kit.
Some photos of the Zero in action here.

Congrats on getting a Zero, and thanks for the detailed pics :-)
I had the idea for a single board computer in every seat on airplanes... but it all just seemed a bit Pi in the Sky!
