WiFi dongle for Pi Zero

Fri Nov 27, 2015 11:53 am

Given that the Pi Zero looks perfect for low cost headless applications does anyone supply a WiFi dongle that plugs directly into the mini USB port? I know there are adapters but they add cost (although not much) and more importantly take up space.
I have in mind to put temperature sensors in several rooms with a single display linked to them via WiFi. The next step would be to control the central heating.

Not a chance of finding anything like that. You're stuck with an adapter.

Well USB OTG is used in many phones and tablets so there are OTG ethernet adapters like these
http://www.amazon.com/Smays-Micro-USB-E ... 009XU6N54/
or OTG flash drives like these http://www.kingston.com/en/usb/otg
or card readers liek these
http://www.ebay.com/itm/291125431330
as for wifi - most phones/tablets already have wi-fi so such adapter is less likely but I would't say there is no chance

but anyway there are those small adapters like these http://www.ebay.com/itm/251999412567 so putting small wifi adapter into this can still be pretty small

This looks like the best adapter https://shop.pimoroni.com/collections/n ... erter-shim because it's as small as possible.

I got my PI Zero from pimoroni yesterday but didn't notice this one otherwise I would get it from them too.

Thanks for all the comments. Looks like I am stuck with an adapter with the pimoroni one a likely choice. Now I have to decide on a temperature sensor (DS18B20 ?).

That's about the easiest one to use with a Pi. Just the sensor(s) and one 4K7 resistor :)

I don't know why they need a phone number on their registration page and it's going to be 7 to 25 days before that USB-B to microUSB shim is delivered. So I won't buy from there.
