simple MIDI sent via Raspi

Hi,
i'm looking to build a DIY project where I can make a box with buttons,
connect it to the Raspberry Pi, connect the raspberry pi via USB (or midi)
so it gives a midi signal to my DAW.
I found many ways to turn the rasp. into a small synth but i want it the other way around, turn my Rasp. into a midi sending device.
