What does 'watch' do?

I couldn't find it by search function so I'll ask.

On any topic there's a 'watch' button. I pressed it and a heart appears.
Now what?

The next time someone replies to that topic you will get an e-mail telling you about it.

This function sometimes delay for a few days.

I got my last notification 2 days after the reply. I'm not sure the delay is from Pi forum or Hotmail.

I typically get my 'watch' email about ten minutes after the reply posting.
