Failed usb hubs

We bought a Raspberry Pi model B some eighteen months ago. During that time, we've had three USB hubs and they've all packed up. Two of these were the little 7-port hubs, and the other was one of those raspberry-shaped ones. One of the 7-port hubs actually shorted out and caught fire. Right now we have no hubs at all, so are limited in our activity with the kit.
I can't say I was very impressed with the 7-port ones, they seemed flimsy. The raspberry shape from Pimoroni was better construction, but they don't seem to be available any more. We do not use wi-fi in the house, so any hub would have to be suited to ethernet/router use.
What are the present recommendations apart from the ones I've mentioned? Surely these can't be the only ones suited to the Pi?
I have to stress we were not pushing the kit beyond its power limits or doing daft things with it.

I'm guessing that the 7-port hub was something like this one:

FWIW, prior to the release of the B+** I investigated the behaviour/quality of a number of low-to-medium cost hubs**** and have made use of these three with my "early Pi's" from time to time:

** and also the Pimoroni hub (which I liked the look of)

Thank you Trev....I'll get the electronics expert in the house to look at these notes either tonight or tomorrow.
