kusti8 is hosting the chromium-browser packages - that was his main intent. He is also hosting his own rpi-youtube package which depends on (parts of) the kweb package and so he is also hosting kweb.
Yes correct. I keep the latest version of both packages because my RPi-youtube depends on kweb

Thanks for the reply... ok... which of the two is (or both) are worth adopting at the moment... I have some folks wanting a recommend, which, I used to recommend kweb, but I'm confused about Chromium atm... and whether it is good, or has too many glitches so far... thanks again for input !

They are very different. Chromium excells at being the best browser in speed, like you would expect on a desktop. It is the fastest and supports the most websites. It rarely crashes. Kweb is excellent at providing a kiosk browser and integrating with the Pi directly (youtube and disabling cache and Java script etc). Try both and see what works. Ultimately, they target different audiences.

im using chromium with the "improved youtube" extension. since i couldnt quite figure out the whole flags / disable DASH thing that you guys are doing (in extensions / options i dont see a "player" option, even with dev. mode on), i just tried different extensions. and this one, after fiddling a little with the options enables me to watch 480p and 360 without interruptions as well. no idea why, since im a noob, but just putting it out there (the extension didnt have a "disable DASH" option though, so its prolly something else, or something related).

also, i was wondering if you had by now fixed the required pi user for youtube-dl? im using another superuser name.

and by the way huge thanks for keeping up the amazing work kusti8 and gkreidl! i'm somewhat poor and thanks to the pi and this chromiumproject i can have it (nearly) all for 50 euros and (even for me) neglectable power costs.

Yes, pi is no longer needed. It should just work.

I really appreciate all your work kusti8! I use it all the time on Ubuntu MATE with no issues whatsoever. Chromium 51 looks very modern with the new makeover. Cheers!

My device doesn't have the memory space for the Chrome browser, so I'm wondering if I can try to install it into another directory.

[email protected]:~ $ df
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/root 3747352 3730968 0 100% /
devtmpfs 469688 0 469688 0% /dev
tmpfs 474004 0 474004 0% /dev/shm
tmpfs 474004 6436 467568 2% /run
tmpfs 5120 4 5116 1% /run/lock
tmpfs 474004 0 474004 0% /sys/fs/cgroup
/dev/mmcblk0p1 61384 20368 41016 34% /boot
tmpfs 94804 4 94800 1% /run/user/1000

I'm using an 8 gig card.... seems there are other areas that might have enough memory,
I'm basically evaluating all the available browsers to determine which is the best one.

Can the installed browser Epiphany go into Kiosk mode? right now, ANY URL I type into
this browser just returns to the Raspberry Pi desktop and quits the browser. Is there any other
things I have to do to Initialize the browser, or is it because I have no more memory.

I'm new to Linux.

It's because you have no memory. Try
sudo apt-get purge wolfram-engine
As a temporary fix and clean up your space.

Your system is unusable. You always need some disk space for linux (logs, temp files etc.). Most browsers cache a lot and they keep the cache if not run in private mode. Which means: they collect a lot of data and it is kept on your SD card.
Minimal Kiosk Browser (kweb)
Slim, fast webkit browser with support for audio+video+playlists+youtube+pdf+download
Optional fullscreen kiosk mode and command interface for embedded applications
Includes omxplayerGUI, an X front end for omxplayer

I read the initial comment and the
THIS WILL ONLY WORK ON A Pi2 AND PI3!
seems to be right.

I did all the installation steps without any issue on Raspberry Pi Zero.

But chromium-browser command does not start with an illegal instruction.
And when started with sudo it silently dies:

Code: Select all

[email protected]:~ $ chromium-browser
Illegal instruction
[email protected]:~ $ sudo chromium-browser
[email protected]:~ $
Is there an easy explanation on WHY it is not working on Pi Zero?

This is currently compiled for ARMv7 which is not compatible on ARMV6 as you have seen. If it were compiled for ARMv6, then it would work.

This worked last week, but now when I try to add the key I get no valid pgp information and after doing sudo-apt update I get an error Not Found [IP:108.168.243.150 80]. I really liked the touchui and then my sd card was corrupted and I am trying a new install and what worked last week does not seem to work now. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I subscribed just to say THANK YOU to kusti8!!

Without your work, my RPi3 would be useless for web browsing! The default "Web" Epiphany crashes, lacks a lot of features and is not compatible with most sites.
I disabled smooth scrolling in Chromium and works very well on normal web sites, I don't even turn on my i5 notebook when I go back home in the evening :)

Thanks for you great work. Chrome is so much faster on my RPi3 than Epiphany. :)

Is this because it's targeted for the newer arch?

No, probably not. Just because it is designed to be multicore and faster.

Package chromium is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
However the following packages replace it:
chromium-inspector chromium-bsu

If you have a RPi 2B or 3B then ArchLinuxArm has Chromium Browser in the Repository:

https://archlinuxarm.org/packages/armv7h/chromium

If you have issues with install the please start a NEW Post in the Arch Section thank you:
