Yep, says wheezy in there:

Code: Select all

deb http://mirrordirector.raspbian.org/raspbian/ wheezy main contrib non-free rpi
# Uncomment line below then 'apt-get update' to enable 'apt-get source'
#deb-src http://mirror.ox.ac.uk/sites/archive.raspbian.org/archive/raspbian/ wheezy main contrib non-free rpi
A quick Google search suggests that a fresh install to the SD card is a safer play than trying to go for an in-place update. Agree?

It's safer, but I performed a upgrade according to some instructions found here and it worked no problem.

If you don't have any important configurations then a fresh install is best, although it is possible to upgrade.

I've followed all the steps and it seems to install correctly, but when I reboot the pi, it hangs on boot at a flashing _. Is anyone else getting this problem?

I suspect this install is just a red herring. You probably didn't shut down the Pi correctly and corrupted your SD card. The best way is to just reinstall.

I'm actually having the exact same problem, everything in the terminal goes fine but after installing chromium doen't show up anywhere. I then rebooted and saw all the raspberrypi stuff getting loaded/checked and after that it shows the flashing _.

I also had similar problems of not finding the Chromium browser after the install procedure and with one install breaking my system (that one was when I followed instructions on a Cornell page).

In this case, I used gdebi instead of dkpg to do the install, since the dpkg had a lot of broken references/libraries. (if you don't have gdebi, you'll have to do an apt-get first). That fixed the install breaking my system.

Then I realized this procedure only had me install 2/3 downloaded .deb's. Do a "sudo gdebi chromium-browser_45.0.2454.85-0ubuntu0.15.04.1.1181_armhf.deb" to install the third one.

After that, the Chromium shortcut will be located in /usr/shared/applications/ and you'll have to manually copy-paste it to where ever you want it.

Side note, I noticed with Wheezy usually packages would place themselves in the correct place in the gui quick launch menus, Jessie doesn't seem to do this.

I'll check it out when I have time, but it worked for me when I tested it, menu and everything.

This worked thank you very much!

Also, one thing I did to make it easier to install was make a shell script. This is how I did it:

Copy and paste commands into leafpad.
Save it as chrome_install.sh in whatever folder. I did root.
chmod +x chrome_install.sh to set permissions
Then ran it ./chrome_install.sh

If you copy and paste the entire thing into a terminal it does the same thing as a script, the line breaks make it go from one command go the other. You just need to press enter on the last command, although a script is definitely easier.

THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO GET CHROMIUM ON JESSIE!
THIS WILL ONLY WORK ON A Pi2!

1. Install and configure Raspbian. There are plenty of guides on how to do this.

THIS HAS BEEN UPDATED FOR JESSIE. SORRY, BUT NO WHEEZY INSTRUCTIONS. JESSIE IS THE FUTURE. ;)
2. Download and install updated Chromium and dependencies:
For anyone who doesn't trust me, these are the same exact files gotten from here:
http://ports.ubuntu.com/pool/universe/c ... m-browser/
If you feel more secure getting the relative files there, by all means. But those files may disappear at any time, which is why I host them on my DropBox.

Code: Select all

wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/87113035/chromium-browser-l10n_45.0.2454.85-0ubuntu0.15.04.1.1181_all.deb
wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/87113035/chromium-browser_45.0.2454.85-0ubuntu0.15.04.1.1181_armhf.deb
wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/87113035/chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra_45.0.2454.85-0ubuntu0.15.04.1.1181_armhf.deb
sudo dpkg -i chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra_45.0.2454.85-0ubuntu0.15.04.1.1181_armhf.deb
sudo dpkg -i chromium-browser-l10n_45.0.2454.85-0ubuntu0.15.04.1.1181_all.deb chromium-browser_45.0.2454.85-0ubuntu0.15.04.1.1181_armhf.deb
You should have Chromium 45 now installed!

Any problems, please post them here, these exact steps haven't been tested, but the general procedure has, so any typos, please report them. ;)
This is outdated. The newest version of Chromium is Chromium 47. Can you update it? Thank you.

Chromium 47 was developed and it had issues, though you are more than welcome to compile your own newer version :D

I chose to revert back to v45 because Chromium had a serious issue with youtube videos and I've heard other videos as well, and because it's a big part of Web browsing and there is no real benefit to v47, I reverted. If there is some feature you need you can take the v47 files from the link posted by FoTL, but there really should be no reason you need an upgrade.

Thank you. I tried installing Chromium 47 from here: http://conoroneill.net/running-the-late ... erry-pi-2/, but I couldn't run any commands in the terminal, so I had to reinstall the OS and so I downloaded Chromium 45 again and it works again!

Now the newest version is Chromium 48. Does it have issues, and if not, how do you install it?

Is there some reason you need v48? If there is nothing specifically that you need from it, then why do you want it? They work the same, all that's changed is mostly bug fixes. Anyways, v48 isn't in the Ubuntu repos yet, so even if it did work, I can't get it.

No idea.

But why do you need it?

There shouldn't be any reason to need it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

99.9% chance it won't. If you're curious, look through the changelogs, but there shouldn't be anything there.

If you have no reason to get it, why do you still want it? You don't need the latest version of something to have it work.
