Everything seemed to install fine for - "Just that it doesn't work" :-

"Chromium Web Browser" appears under "Internet" on the pull down - and then the cursor changes to a rotating circle for about 15 seconds before returning to it's normal arrow shape.

As you can see everything loaded seemlessly - I was using the Latest version - "2015-11-21-raspbian-jesse.img" and installing it on a Raspberry Pi Model B+

Of course it will not function the version of Chromium, as stated on first page, is for RPi 2B which has the ARMv7 CPU

THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO GET CHROMIUM ON JESSIE!
THIS WILL ONLY WORK ON A Pi2!

You have a RPi 1B+ which has the ARMv6 CPU
Retired disgracefully.....

I think you should use 'chromium-browser' as executable name.

That's because the PI-Zero aka the Hero has an Armv6 processor and the PI ultimate 2 has an Armv7 processor so the architecture is different, so that's why you are getting "illegal instruction"
By thinking like an engineer you can create a raspberry pi.

I got the PI model B, B+ and PI 2 model B.
When will I get the A? I don't know.

On my Pi2, Rasbian Jessie, Chromium does very poorly when playing HTML5 video. Epiphany plays HTML5 video very well. I'm guessing Chromium isn't using the Pi's video chip?

Great guide!

If you are really, really desperate for the latest chromium, here's a different way to do it. (Sorry if I'm nitpicking)

1. Paste this into your /etc/apt/sources.list file with

Code: Select all

sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list

Code: Select all

deb http://ports.ubuntu.com/ wily main restricted universe multiverse
deb-src http://ports.ubuntu.com/ wily main restricted universe multiverse

deb http://ports.ubuntu.com/ wily-updates main restricted universe multiverse
deb-src http://ports.ubuntu.com/ wily-updates main restricted universe multiverse

deb http://ports.ubuntu.com/ wily-security main restricted universe multiverse
deb-src http://ports.ubuntu.com/ wily-security main restricted universe multiverse

deb http://ports.ubuntu.com/ wily-backports main restricted universe multiverse
deb-src http://ports.ubuntu.com/ wily-backports main restricted universe multiverse

#deb http://mirrordirector.raspbian.org/raspbian/ jessie main contrib non-free rpi
# Uncomment line below then 'apt-get update' to enable 'apt-get source'
#deb-src http://archive.raspbian.org/raspbian/ jessie main contrib non-free rpi
2. Reload package lists:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
3. Install chromium:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install chromium-browser
4. Fix the package lists:

Code: Select all

sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
Paste this into it:

Code: Select all

#deb http://ports.ubuntu.com/ wily main restricted universe multiverse
#deb-src http://ports.ubuntu.com/ wily main restricted universe multiverse

#deb http://ports.ubuntu.com/ wily-updates main restricted universe multiverse
#deb-src http://ports.ubuntu.com/ wily-updates main restricted universe multiverse

#deb http://ports.ubuntu.com/ wily-security main restricted universe multiverse
#deb-src http://ports.ubuntu.com/ wily-security main restricted universe multiverse

#deb http://ports.ubuntu.com/ wily-backports main restricted universe multiverse
#deb-src http://ports.ubuntu.com/ wily-backports main restricted universe multiverse

deb http://mirrordirector.raspbian.org/raspbian/ jessie main contrib non-free rpi
# Uncomment line below then 'apt-get update' to enable 'apt-get source'
#deb-src http://archive.raspbian.org/raspbian/ jessie main contrib non-free rpi
5. Reload the package lists:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
6. Done! Enjoy!

In the past I have had a Debian system totally hosed by doing such installation from Ubuntu repos.

Ubuntu packages are not the same, their dependencies are not the same, it can lead to chaos and a system that is no longer up updatable.

Beware.

+1
The chromium package and its dependencies look fine, but adding the entire Ubuntu repo is way overkill and not necessary. I'll update the links in the guide for the new version sometime.

I've always had a suspicion that there is a way to install "foreign" packages into Debian without risking messing up the dependencies. Never took the time to figure out how.

If you can pull it off for Chromium, kusti8, they would be awesome. The technique may well be useful for many other applications.

If you can pull it off for Chromium, kusti8, they would be awesome. The technique may well be useful for many other applications.
As far as I can tell, this does not mess up dependencies. All the dependencies usually needed are gotten from Debian, only the minimal Chromium packages are gotten from Ubuntu. They are the same name, and are not requesting impossible packages etc. I sort of got lucky with Chromium.

Updated! :D

Sorry Kratos, but please don't follow those instructions. It may work fine, but its a little crude and more things could go wrong. The OP has now been updated for v47!

It doesn't make sense to upgrade until we get hardware acceleration, basically you will get the same performance from all "blink" versions of chromium.

By thinking like an engineer you can create a raspberry pi.

I got the PI model B, B+ and PI 2 model B.
When will I get the A? I don't know.
