The problem is that the USB might get in the way a bit.

Too increase the height of the display screen add on board you could add a stacking header between the Pi and the display board.

Maybe you should be asking that question of the manufacturer/supplier?

But it seems to me that if the original version of the adapter card was compatible with an RPi Model 2 then -

a) it would work;

but

b) there would have been no need for the supplier to introduce a later version for the Model 2.

Conversely, since the supplier did see the need to make a modified version, and your experience is that the original doesn't work, maybe it is reasonable to assume that it is not compatible in some way?

The RPi-Display works also with the RPi 1 model B+ or RPi 2 model B. But you need a stacking header.
A connection with a flat cable is not possible because then every 2nd pin is swapped.

make sure you do:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install

You may also need to check for a newer driver, as the Raspberry Pi 2 changed the I/O base address, and a *LOT* of software needs re-compilation after a minor change before it will work on an RPi2
