Anyone know of any good 3.5" 640x480 LCDs?

Thu Apr 09, 2015 11:51 am

Having a bit of trouble finding an LCD. I see ones like this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/121386386586

Where they say 640x480, but i also see a lot like that, that say 320x240, and even some on Amazon claiming to be 640x480 have been revealed to be 320x240 once someone opened it up and searched the LCD part number.

So i'm looking for a 3.5" 640x480 resolution screen for a gameboy pi2. Let me know if you know of any reasonably priced. Only one i seen so far that's been confirmed, cost $240, but it's made for aviation.
My RPi needs a fan, heat will leech into the battery, so people saying I don't need a fan, don't understand how Li-Po batteries are affected by high temps. Cool pi = cool battery.
I would very much so like to see a Pi2/Pi3 Zero, power and size.

Just an update for everyone:
I did manage to find this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/180922018470

That price though. The controller board is the same general size as the LCD, i would worry about the flex cable though.
It's 5v so it could be run off the same power as the pi.
It supports VGA, so an HDMI to VGA adapter would probably work really well for a sharp image. Looks perfect for a classic gameboy emulator handheld.

I would worry about the size. RPi + controller board + screen + HDMI2VGA converter (NOTE: *not* an adapter) will be something the size of a brick...

The pi won't be too bad once i remove the usb ports, networking port and header pins. The HDMI to VGA isn't too bad either, just remove the cables and solder the LCD controller board's vga, right to the converter, as for the hdmi, i've not decided what to do about that yet, either solder directly using kynar, or something like that, i'll have to look into that more, i want to also have an external hdmi port too.
The board in my HDMI to VGA is fairly small, so i can work with that, it's all surface mount stuff, excluding the vga connector.
Someone managed to do something similar with a gameboy pocket, and a classic gameboy is a good chunk larger.

that's expensive for a bulky messy LCD.

Yes it is, but it's 640x480 and vga. i don't want to use composite directly if i can avoid it.
If you know of any neater 3.5" 640x480 LCDs that support HDMI or vga, don't hesitate to link it.
I'll have a bit of room to work with, but i will admit that's a bit bulkier than i'd prefer. Take the headers off and solder wires directly.
I may put a touch screen in it too, just a little resistive touch one.
I'll also use custom buttons on it to make the buttons as small and as neat as possible.

But yeah, if you can find another LCD with the same specs for less, don't hold out on me! i don't want some 320x240 composite screen.

I got on ebay a 10 inch 1920x1200 display. Still a bit messy with three cards + LCD.

Thanks for the replies, but those won't fit in a gameboy.

3.5" is the limit, and i very specifically want 640x480.. though admittedly that's half my budget.
The one i linked, the control board is ok, but the position of the flex cable connector is really bad, i wouldn't fold back right. This one would be MUCH better, if i could figure out where to get it.

The website isn't in english and it's not one of those, click and buy sites, so i'm having trouble finding the right control board, But i'm pretty much set on the LCD module itself.
PD035VX2 is the only suitable 640x480, 3.5" LCD that i've found so far.

If anyone knows of any other 3.5" 640x480 LCDs, don't hold out on me.
Keep in mind, a lot of the rear view camera displays, say 640x480, but aren't.

Edit: if anyone knows what controller board is being used in the picture i just linked, that'd be nice, i'll get the controller board separate if it means it'll fit better.

Update: the controller board is SAGV2606 Still haven't found where to buy it, but it has a vga/hdmi/power daughter board, if i can find a way to bypass the daughter board and solder right to the controller board, it would work, it would be smaller, it would fold over properly, and would fit into a gameboy

I know i'm kind of bumping this, but i've just put in the order for all the other parts for my RPi2 Gameboy, and i'm still in need of a 3.5" 640x480 screen. i found a website that sells the pd035vx2 with the SAGV2606, but i would really rather use a different screen. I don't know if there are any other 3.5" 640x480 screens out there for the same price or less.
http://www.cart100.com/Product/16777355465/
This site shows the SAGV2606 board with a daughter board for the connectors and what appears to just be power. And it could likely be dismissed.

I don't know of any other screens, it seems to go from 3.5" to 5.6" not seeing other options that would fit into an original gameboy. Let me know if any of you can think of something.

I know I'm opening up an old thread here, but I was also searching for a higher resolution screen for a similar project. That's when I stumbled upon this 800x480 screen here. For anyone else looking here's the link
