in lieu, it seems deeply weird that with 4M units sold, there is so little information collated.
where is information to be had on portable displays for the RPi?
I would expect there to be a comparison chart showing screens available,
format, power requirements, communication protocol, etc...

There really aren't that many options that are cost effective. There is the hdmipi
, there is an offering from neosec
, there are Motorla lapdocks
if you can find one at a reasonable price and then there are panels and driver boards like this
. You can buy small displays intended for reversing cameras, but they only accept composite input. Also, there are small HDMI displays designed to be used as video monitors for DSLRs, but they are comparatively expensive.
