Is it true that 1/2 million Raspberry Pi 2 have been sold?

Thu Feb 19, 2015 6:30 am

Raspberry Pi 2 sales top 500,000 in two weeks
Exclusive Eben Upton tells us that latest model already accounts for one in 10 sales
By Dave Neal, Wed Feb 18 2015, 15:49
EBEN UPTON, the head of the UK computing success story that is the Raspberry Pi Foundation, has told The INQUIRER that the new Raspberry Pi 2 has sold around 500,000 units.

Is it true? Have you really sold 500 000 Raspberry Pi 2 units in about two weeks?
Farnell UK has been saying "Awaiting delivery" for about two weeks and in the last 11 days it sold less than 1000 Raspberry Pi B.

Let's see, there was a large stock of Pi 2s when it was launched (about 200 000 iirc), Sony have been making 20 000 a day since then so that's another 280 000 at least, plus there have been a load made in China for the non-European market.

I'd say it was entirely possibly that 500 000 have been sold so far :-)

Liz indicated that 300K sold the first week, so if the supplies held up, 500K by now is not an unreasonable figure.

I'd be more concerned with the production side. It has been mentioned that there is Chinese production of P12Bs for the Asian and North American markets. So that would mean that production is over 20K per day. I note that mine, ordered and shipped on launch day from MCM, is made in the UK.

Then there is the issue that a lot of Chinese manufacturing shuts down for the Lunar New Year, and tomorrow (19 Feb.) is the start of the year under that calendar.

Raspberry Pi Model B+
https://www.sparkfun.com/products/12994
1,092 in stock

Raspberry Pi 2, no unit at Sparkfun, they have never sold this model, same as in the case of Farnell UK.

It is a bit strange!

I think they have sold it to resellers, the real amount of RPi 2 running in the hand of the custumer is still unknown.

Well, after this Lunar New Year, I'd like to start with RPi 2 B+.

They've sold it to whoever wanted to buy one, resellers and customers alike.

The only metric they have for number sold is the number that have been sold by RS and Farnell, they can't track resale figures.

I believe 500k is about right. Production is in excess of 20k per day, and backlogged orders are being serviced as quickly as possible.

Lead times quoted on the major websites are overly pessimistic judging from the comments here.

500,000 in a little more than two weaks, amazing. So the Pi2 is The Runner. (Der Renner in German.) Meaning fast as well as an attraction, best-seller, etc. How true the term is this time.

Seams like many existing Pi1 users and new interested parties tend to think :
The Raspberry Pi two,
a Dream comes true.

Congratulations, again! Very well-deserved.

I must be imagining the Pi2 that has been sat on my desk for the past couple of weeks since I bought it from Farnell.

Raspberry Pi 2 - Basic Starter Kit
Availability: In stock.
$69.95
Source: http://www.canakit.com/raspberry-pi-2-basic-kit.html
That will cost me at least 90$ if I order one kit. Where exactly can I find Raspberry Pi 2 boards with no accessories?
Somebody says he bought a Raspberry Pi 2 from Farnell UK. I have opened that site each day since Feb. 2, 2015 but I haven not seen Farnell having Raspberry Pi 2 units in stock.

Both our main distributors are selling-through. This means that they are not able to hold any stock because demand is outstripping supply. The bottleneck is that our contract manufacturing sites literally can't make them fast enough.

Third-party distributors are price gouging to take advantage of this lack of supply.

Orders taken at the main distributors will be fulfilled in approximate sequence - if you buy one now from RS/Farnell then your order should pop out of the queue in the not-too-distant future. Note that the quoted lead times on Pi2 are in practice an overestimate.

Yes, this is a good idea. CPC Farnell has 1543 Raspberry Pi 2 units in stock.
I simply wrote 2000 units and press BUY and the site returned just 1543 in stock.
see: http://cpc.farnell.com/raspberry-pi/ras ... dp/SC13793
In the next 10 days, I will check the CPC stock daily to see how well Raspberry Pi 2 sells.

Very typical of new RPF products. I expect the same pattern to hold for future RPF products. Initial surge of orders will clean out the starting stock and then outstrip production capacity for three to six months. I say this not to criticize either the RPF, the factory maangement, nor the primary suppliers. It simply shows that the RPF is so good at designing new products that very large numbers of people want them, and want them as near to immediately as possible. There are vast arrays of companies that probably envy the RPF over this customer behavior.

Or the tl;dr version... Go RPF! Keep coming up with "must have" items!

I received my PI 2 Tuesday. Love it. When will RASPBMC be released for PI 2? Does not work with the last revision.

CPC Farnell
Thu Feb 19, 2015, 6:33 pm - 1543 Raspberry Pi 2 units in stock
Thu Feb 19, 2015 8:59 pm - 1527 Raspberry Pi 2 units in stock
see: http://cpc.farnell.com/raspberry-pi/ras ... dp/SC13793

This means that CPC Franell sells 6.57 Raspberry Pi 2 / hour which is 2208 units in 2 weeks.

For 500 000 boards sold in 14 days 226 vendors like CPC Farnell would have been necessary!! I do not find them on the net.

but you haven't considered that new stock may have arrived since your first 'in stock' figure.

Statistically the hypothesis of a new stock that arrived in the meantime is unlikely. We can check the stock in a few hours, three times tomorrow, etc. and you will see that the figure decreases continuously. The idea that new stock arrives a few times a day for days in a row, and by an extraordinary coincidence each time I check the site I see a figure smaller than the previous one, is not plausible.

Will not be updated for Pi2; successor of Raspbmc is OSMC https://osmc.tv/2015/02/raspberry-pi-2- ... c-support/

RaspBMC is being replaced by OSMC which is at alpha4 now and supports the Pi2.

That's one data point - to extrapolait the total sales over two weeks from that one vendor, one data point, is somewhat flakey
