I'm totally new to this whole thing so please be patient with me. I'm trying to instal retro pi on an sd card using my mac. now I've downloaded the rpi sd card builder unzipped it and double clicked the app. it keeps telling me it can not open the app. so i am a complete loss here. and right off the bat totally discouraged about this whole pi thing and wondering if I've made a mistake. from my understanding all i have to do is get this retro pi operating system on the sd card install it into the pi boot it up configure it copy some rooms over and I'm good to go. so far i can't even do the first step please help.

Please be more specific with the error message in OS X...

OS X is my 3rd operating system of choice so I might be a little rusty but are you referring to a message that says something along the lines of "cannot open because x is from an unknown developer" ?

If so I'm pretty certain right clicking the app the selecting open will do the trick?

Regards

the exact message is as follows

The application “RPi-sd card builder v1.2” can’t be opened.

my version of os x is fully current and up to date I've checked to see if its a security thing being from an unknown developer I can't figure out why it won't open. I downloaded the file unzipped it and tried opening it and nothing. With the cost of the pi and shipping and memory cards power supply and case I'm into this thing almost $200 and I can't even get the sd card loaded. please any help would be appreciated i didn't expect this to be so difficult

What is the ending of the file? Is it app or sh or img?

The alternative is to use dd instead and there are many guides on how to do that. That is what I use on my Mac.

The ApplePi-Baker is an OSX application. It will transfer the image file to your microsd card. I use it to for all my singe board computers.

The best application to use under OSX to write Raspberry Pi boot media sets is something called "Virtual Box".
