Shellinabox - running but unable to connect

Sun Jun 20, 2021 8:27 pm

Hi there,

Installation of shellinabox seems to have gone successfully but it doesn't appear to be working.

Status shows its active and listening on the default port but I cannot connect either remotely across the LAN using Pi_IP_Address:4200 or locally on the Pi web browser using 127.0.0.1:4200

I can logon across the LAN using SSH so that side of it should be OK.

Not sure where I should start looking so any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks & kind regards,

Actually I've made a little progress on this.

If I type https://Pi_IP_Address:Port into a web browser I now get the following;

Your connection isn't private
Attackers might be trying to steal your information from PI_IP_Address (for example, passwords, messages or credit cards).
NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID

And the title bar shows Not secure and the https: part in red and struckthrough

If I click on Advanced I get;

This server couldn't prove that it's Pi_IP_Address; its security certificate is not trusted by your computer's operating system. This may be caused by a misconfiguration or an attacker intercepting your connection.

But then if I click on Continue to PI_IP_Address (unsafe) I actually get to the login page of my Pi and entering my username/password I am at the prompt so guessing it might be a security certificate error or something similar?

The next time I connect using https:// from the same browser it seems I am able to connect. I can then logon via RPIMonitor on that same PC browser just not from RPIMonitor on my iPhone for example.

I guess I just had to authenticate via https on each device I am trying to connect from?

Thanks & kind regards,

It would be useful in these sorts of posts if the poster (that's you) would explain at least a little of what, in this case, "ShellInABox" is.

Yes, I know I could Google it, but why should I bother?

Also, the general comeback is "Well, the people who can help me with my problem will be precisely those people who already know what ShellInaBox is and I don't care about any other people". Well, the problem with that is that very few people will have ever heard of it, but many people might be willing to help, if they had some idea of what it is all about. I.e., give them some sort of idea what is going on, and they might be inclined to expend the effort to Google it and find out what it is. And then post something helpful on the forum.

I think I myself fit into this category.

Seems like that was indeed the solution and my theory about authenticating via https on each device I am trying to connect from first was correct.

I was unable to connect locally from the Pi and my iPhone, iPad, PC, MacBook, iMac etc. but after I logged on directly on each device from the various browsers using https first it appears I can now logon via http and also through the Shellinabox Addon within RPIMonitor...that's all it was.

Hope that might help anybody who might stumble across this thread in the future.
