Rpi 4 4GB for video, cooling needed?

Fri Mar 19, 2021 6:35 am

I'm going to literally use my Rpi4 for nothing other than Kodi. I watch 1080p at most and might do so at different moments every day for a total of a few hours. Watching maybe 2 hours at one time at the most. Do I need some kind of cooling solution? And if so, what is out there? Also, I should mention I use an add-on board for SPDIF output so I need a case that can handle that in there as well.

Thanks for any help!

cooling is always good, but you can try without, if it slows to much then you know you need cooling.it throttles at 80

My concern by then is that I've gotten the wrong case, etc etc. I feel like I'd rather know ahead of time so i can by the right case to fit whatever cooling and my add on audio board

+1
You can tell ifs its slowed down, even briefly, with this command

Code: Select all

vcgencmd get_throttled
If this says 0x0, then the cooling is fine, it has not slowed down.

Can anyone recommend me a cooling solution for a Rpi4 4GB that also needs to have my HiFiberry Digi+ in the case?

Thanks for the info.
Not sure I understand, I've been reading online as much as I can, what types of operations exactly are going to overheat the RPi4? I mean is just playing 1080p videos for a few hours enough to need cooling?

You will find it very difficult to "overheat" any Raspberry Pi, all have in built Thermal Management:

The information is out there....you just have to let it in.

In my experience, no.

Ok, but hot to the point of damaging furniture can still be a problem.

Sensible people use standoffs, maybe a case or even standing on their side with a suitable stand. Many of the "click bait" websites have not been updated to take account of improvements made over the last couple of years:

Thanks so much. If I'm gonna find a case I'm gonna need one that can fit my HiFiberry DAC+

The Pi is more likely to damage furniture from scratches by placing it unprotected on the surface. The heat mostly comes from the SOC, which is on the top of the board and below the ports, gpio pins, etc. It would be exceedingly difficult to accidentally lay it against a surface and cause damage from the heat.
The bigger concern is somebody accidentally touching it with bare skin.

Remember too, that the temperature measured internally is considerably higher than the temperature on the outside of the SOC package -- but I still use a case for any Pi in a long-term (as opposed to development) role. I have two Pi4B running with near 100% CPU load 24/7 -- they will throttle if not cooled, so I use a small heatsink, small fan, and an open frame case.

i access everything from my rpi400 running ubuntu 2010.
i run heatsink + fan

With a pi, look at what your doing:

1080p video

Does it make the pi work:

Yes

If answer == Yes:
Cooling, maybe just a big heatsink if possible or small fan

Personally I stick with only useing heatsinks when needed, EG my desktop pi which has the argon one case which acts as a huge heatsink and a temp controlled fan which only turns on near throttle
Running with a Raspberry Pi 4B 4GB with Raspberry Pi OS with MATE Desktop
Why not overclock, push some more performance out of your computer!

On the 2nd PI 4B I Bought I used a metal case that mounts on the vesa mount behind the tv.

I added a fan there just to make sure it has some airflow on the back. As well as the hardware power switch and fan control I created for my other Pi 4B.

If you have a sudden large heatwave and you don't have cooling then you are sunk [pun intended].

I use Flirc heatsink/cases on mine but as they are run 24/7 at full load most of the time I have modified the cases for even more cooling to allow for a heatwave.

I hate fans!
