any way to fix the microSD card reader on the P3b+?

Fri Sep 14, 2018 5:43 am

I got three Pi3B+

one of the units seems to have issue reading microsd card.
the same card/image works on the other two PIs

that bad one it worked initially but when I took the card out to rewrite it it could never read the card again or any other card while the other two reads it fine.

I don't see the green read light when it powers on :(

You should assume that the SDCard has gone bad, before anything else. Try it in another RPi. Try sticking a new copy of plain Raspbian on it with Etcher. Try a factory fresh SDCard.

Your 3B+ supports booting from a USB device. Try that to prove whether the board works or not.

You may be looking at a £35 fix for your problem.

The suggestion to try booting the suspect RPi from mass storage is worthwhile, since it may be more than the microSD card reader that has faulted.

don't you have to do some configuration first to get the R3B+ to boot off a USB device? boot from USB is not enabled by default.

I tried 3 different cards on this Pie and it won't read/boot. those cards work on my oher PIs fine.

unless I did it wrong I did write an image to a usb stick and tried to boot from that. didn't work though.

might have to scrap this unit.

It's enabled in the factory on RPi3B+

EDIT: this may not be relevant if all your Pis are Pi3B+

Not all images will work on a Pi3B+. Try a new download of the latest Raspbian.

Older Raspbian Stretch images can be updated on an older Pi:

Code: Select all

sudo apt update
sudo apt full-update
Older Raspbian (Jessie, Wheezy) and other OSs are more tricky -- results not guaranteed.
You need to say what OS and its version/date and maybe someone can help.

Likewise NOOBS can be updated but a new image is easier.

Plain Raspbian Stretch & Etcher.io (to write it to your USB stick).

Before you toss it, it might be worth looking in the card slot for physical damage - bent pins, &c.

It would be worth seeing what "return, test, repair or replace" service the retailer you bought it from offers. It may even be covered by warranty.
