What is configuration of wiring connection use db9 serial port from output device to RPi 3 by IDC10 head connector

Wed Jun 13, 2018 1:35 pm

Hi all,

I am newbie in RPi.
I want to know what is suitable configuration the connection to raspberry pi 3 if device output which is use serial port db9 then give digital signal to raspberry pi 3 by IDC10 Head Connector ? It is must add another adapter/interface ?

1. Port db9 (male) on the rear from device output like monitor, pc, etc
2. Then connect to the end of serial cable which is 10 pins (female) >>> IDC10 Head Connector
3. From that IDC10 Connector must be connect to RPi 3

What you have is the backplate of a PC slot, there is no equivalent for that on a PI, and the PI has no RS232 serial I/O.

It only has a USART, which creates logic level (3.3V levels) serial signals, these must be converted to RS232 levels (plus and minus 10 to 15 volt) using a "serial driver/receiver (tranceiver)" chip such as an MAX2323 (suitable for 3.3V levels).

There should be some motherboard standards for wiring 9-way to IDC 10-way but not all their wiring is the same, as the company I worked for found out when they bought assemblies from a different supplier than usual.

It should be easy enough to figure out what the wiring from one to the other is with a continuity tester.

Nitpick... There is no such thing as a "DB-9" connector. What is shown is a DE-9.

Try a search on the phrase

Ultra Compact RS232 to TTL Converter with Male DB9

and you will probably want some conection leads to connect it to the header.
You can make a real CPU in a FPGA, but you can’t make a real FPGA in a CPU.

If you buy a converter, make sure it uses 3V3, not 5V0. Getting that wrong will probably damage your Pi.
