Project: Covert Recording in bait car using Rasberry Pi + Camera Module

Mon Oct 16, 2017 8:40 pm

Dear All,
Want to plant a bait car, with a rasberry pi and camera module recording continuously (24/7) for prolong periods of time.

Rasberry Pi Zero with camera module recording to either USB key or Micro SD
Leisure battery pack (110ah at 12v =1320W of Power)
12V to 5V dc-dc step down converter

I would like to hear if anyone has any advice on this on whether they have used the camera module to record over prolong periods of time. Ideally would leave the car for two weeks at a time before needing to charge batteries again. Option I could do is use 3 or 4 batteries in parallel. Anyone have the rough size of the file per hour of recording either at 720p or 1080p?

Any advice would be great appreciate :D

Are you proposing to spy on somebody?

The term 'bait' sounds to me like they're trying to catch a thief / vandaliser / tresspasser.
Pi3b - 'normal use' temperature (25% CPU load) 76℃, ambient 21℃

Please look up what a 'bait car' is.

I know what a bait car is.

Wikipedia tells me they are used by law enforcement.

I'm guessing our OP is not in law enforcement.

is it illuminated at night ?
do you have IR flood lights
then you know if to use a NOIR camera
file size is dependent on a lot of things, best bet is to try it out yourself
I'd use a frame rate something like 8fps if you're not too worried about fast moving things

you can get an msata ssd adapter board [https://www.scan.co.uk/products/lycom-p ... ith-mounti other places have them]
so you 3could run a large msata drive on it for storage

This depends on the bitrate setting, and amount of noise/movement in the image.

Default bitrate for raspivid is 17Mbps so potentially a maximum of 7GB an hour at 1080
but in practice will be much lower.

Have a look at this for a complete similar continuous recording project :

Android app - Raspi Card Imager - download and image SD cards - No PC required !
