El Reg has an interesting article about the Aakach android tablet, which is supposed to have a manufacturing cost (in India) of $35. They say it would have been even cheaper if manufactured in China.

It's designed by a British company called Datawind:

They're gonna sell a version of the Aakach in the UK for 100 GBP and throw in a year of free internet:

Yes, I saw that. Must be pretty heavily subsidised, and they must be expecting to make a hell of a lot of them to get down to that price (multiple millions). I'm not convinced of the $39 manufacturer cost stated either. That seems low for something in a case with LCD and touchscreen. Mind you, it's a pretty slow processor, although I'm not sure which Conexant it is.

That said, good effort.

From the article below about the non-subsided version:

The company says it will also offer a commercial version of the tablet, called UbiSlate. It is expected to hit the shelves later this year, retailing for about $60.

According to Wikipedia it will retail at about $66.68.

I remember India announcing $10 laptop few years back.
I even remember OLPC at $100.

I read an article the Aakach's history. It chronicled the $10 laptop, the replacement prototype that turned the laptop into a tablet, and finally the current Aakach. The article contends that the original $10 laptop was actually made. But the laptop was so under-powered that the Indian government switched to a $30 tablet that a local start-up or student (conflicting reports on this detail) had provided to the government.

To accommodate the new $30 price point the tablet design was reworked. The overall part count went down but the touch screen and shifting world economy drove up the cost. As before, this drove down the processor quality and they were in the same boat as the $10 laptop. So to save face and get a feasible product the India government outsourced development to a UK company: DataWind. India gave up many of the rights to the product on international sales. Then they subsidized the hell out of the local versions.

My conjecture is that if this sees ANY success on the international market look for the UK company that owns most of the rights to move production to China by this time next year with a couple of additions (bigger screen and more memory.) That way the Indian government can say DataWind moved production to China and not them and collect some royalties.

The price is now $38: http://ubislate.us/product.php?prodid=1

Crazy how low-end prices are dropping.

It didnt sell as much as expected because of the poor build and performance!!

I wrote that in 2011, but still seems about right.
