windows 10 thoughts ??

Tue Sep 30, 2014 6:08 pm

Microsoft just launched its new windows 10!!
first of all the name is quiet absurd, i mean 7 8 10 doesn't make a lot of sense.
Anyway, this new windows is what would happen if you cross win 7 with win 8, in a good way tho, and its pulled off very well!!

So what do you guyz think???

The Windows 9 floppies went missing? 7 ate 9 (sorry)?

I don't see the point of this thread, but in any case, I think it's fantastic. Should do wonders for Linux.

If it's an amalgam of Win7 & Win8.1 it should be called Win15.1. If it's not that different to 8.1 then it should be 8.2.

The only reason they've given it a new version number is so they can charge a different price for it. Releases are usually priced the same as the dot zero version.

Still a botch of IBM OS/2, yep 25 years of innovation

Will it be NT 7 ?

Surely Windows 10 is a nod to OS X in naming ?

I love how presumptuous MS are....

"Windows Insider Program is almost here
Thanks for your excitement about the Windows Insider Program. We're prepping for the release, so please check back soon. "

I'm certainly not excited about it, that's the first thing they've got wrong :D

"Microsoft unveils Windows 10 system with Start Menu"

Revolutionary

Not really. The first NT (which I used as a beta very many years ago) wasn't really based on OS/2. It forked very early in its development and went the way of Windows whilst OS/2 continued to be developed by IBM. So they were quite different in the end even though NT was originally intended to be OS/3

Semantics, without OS/2 there would be no Windows NT3.0........

It's not a good joke if you give the clue away.

Also there was a "windows 2" already, it wasn't much of a success.

Slackware jumped a number of versions at one time to keep parity with Red Hat. I'm no MS fan but it isn't the first time it has done. I still use Win for Gaming rigs and the biggiest irritation for me is that they lock versions of DX to versions of Windows. There is no damn reason why DX 12 can't be issued to Win 7 users.

I really hope Linux keeps making headway into games so that one day all PCs can be something other than Win. I'm really hoping SteamOS can evolve into something competitive.

I can't say if win 10 will make an appearance at my house, but with Win 8.1 tablets showing up at $99 it is a possibility.

It's probably Windows 10 because MS is afraid of the number after eight being referred to as "Windows NEIN".

Unfortunately, there is the risk that it will break the old rule about never buying an even numbered version of Windows (ME, Vista, 8).

In what sense are "ME" and "Vista" even numbers? (In fact, I say that they are not even numbers at all [with pun intended…])

Also, 98 is an even number. And that was a "good version" of Windows (to the extent that such can be said to exist).
And some folks need to stop being fanboys and see the forest behind the trees.

(One of the best lines I've seen on this board lately)

Since you are just being obtuse, I'll explain. People are referring to the order that these versions were released.

Windows 3.1 was good. It was the 3rd release, therefore an odd number. Windows 95 was not so good. It was the 4th release, an even number. Windows 98 was the 5th, so odd, so good. Windows ME was next, so even. Windows XP was next, so odd.

Vista- even. Sucked.

Win 7- odd. Sucked less.

Win 8- even. Blowed.

Win 9- odd. Probably excellent, but we'll never see it.

Win 10-even. Can the curse be broken? Can we pretend it's actually "9", and odd, or will it be a real even?

The answer as far as I am concerned is moot. I use Linux.

Anyway, the corollary to this is Star Trek movies, where even-numbered ones are good.

Hi

Well I am a little confused, it started with you asking what I think... At this time of the morning?

I see a screenshot on the BBC that says "One product family One platform One store"

Which platform? I got mostly Intel processors, so ...
or is it the PC, so me laptop gets ignored?

"Windows 10 would be released for both types of chip architecture", thats Intel and ARM. So is that count now 2

I take it Broadcom aint gonna be the platform of choice.

The BBC man is very clever, he said it has a start button. There looks like an area of the screen to click on, but it don't say START. How does he know?

I'm waiting for OpenSuSE 14, now that is summat to get excited about.

Counting major versions from this list http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Mi ... s_versions, Windows 8 was the twelfth release so Windows 10 will be unlucky 13.

You have to count the versions of Windows NT family, not the MS-DOS family

NT3
NT3.5
NT4
NT5 W2K
NT5.1 XP
NT6 Vista
NT6.1W7
NT6.2 W8
NT6.3 W8.1
NT7 aka Windows 10

If you're going to count NT3.5 then you should also count Windows 3.11 since adding networking was a major change.
