New user with no idea where to start.

Good Day to all.

I am a new proud owner of a Raspberry Pi. The intent was to set this up to play some “back when your father was your age” games for the kiddos on the TV. (For the record the Atari will not play the games that are having been sitting around for years). When the kids were over we tried to install the NOOBS software on to the Windows 7 (64bit) PC, but the download kept failing, so they downloaded RetroPi. After getting the Pi started, the kids changed the setup to look like the normal computer. The problem is that I cannot get the sound to work from the HDMI port (or find some way to test the audio, and I do not have any headphones to test the headphone jack. Furthermore, when I go online to look up videos on the YouTube, I cannot get the videos to open.
The kids said that they put Pong and Artillery Duel on the system as well, but I would need to setup the controllers. I still can not find the game to open and play.

I have followed and possibly gotten lost using the instructions from the post at http://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewt ... 26&t=12358 for the sound setup. Moreover, I have given up on reading posts about setting up the YouTube. Does anybody know of a place I can find step by step instructions as to what program to open, what exactly to click-on or type in. I feel as if everyone is implying several steps or places to go to get to the files or test procedures prior to doing the steps in the instructions.

Please Help, I have no idea as to what I am doing with this computer.

Sensory,
Grandpa

Hi,

The computers intelligence is still limited in a way that they do what they are told to do, not what we would like them to do (these two things are not necessarily equal)...
Moreover, computers can do unlimited different things. Consequently, due to this flexibility, (typically) several steps are required in order to specify exactly what they should do.

I know that I haven't wrote anything new to you... so... google, read, learn... and don't be afraid to try this and that.
When you see a solution with tens of commands to be executed, go step by step and perform each. None in these articles authors is paid according to number of commands specified, so (most likely) each of them have its reason to be listed.

Computers are very time-consuming devices - for all kind of tasks. ;-)

Good luck, Ivan Zilic.
Running out of GPIO pins and/or need to read analog values?
