Stumbled upon this today and found it to be kind of relevant to what the RPi community has going on right now.

Interesting point where he says school is like prison because the prize is getting out. That kids know they are in school only because they are small and weak and that when they become adults they can leave. Which means that drop-outs succeed earlier than nerds, and a large percentage of the population associate learning with childhood, and expect to never do it again.

I can not imagine what life must be like if you don't expect to keep learning every day for the rest of your life. It must be very dull.

Dull as it may be, a frighteningly large proportion of kids these days would rather lead dull, uneducated lives living off the state than push a single limit.

I agree with him when he talks about the speed people learn though. I hated school for many reasons and left with no qualifications which is something I now bitterly regret. However as I've gotten older and slowed down, I find I like the gentle challenge of learning Python, and finding out about Linux distros, which without the internet of course I wouldn't be able to do now.

Or perhaps it's absolutely great, being happy with your lot in life, no need for greater knowledge, no need to question things nor to explore further.

Mills said, "it is better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied, better to be Socrates dissatisfied than a fool satisfied", but I've had friends who would fit Mills' description of fools satisfied, who amble through life without a care or worry in the world, who are happier than I will likely ever be, and I find it impossible to say they are worse off for that. Sometimes I even feel a little envious.
