Longest Raspberry Pi uptime

Wed Jul 10, 2013 4:21 am

Just for fun (or for any practical purpose this may serve).

How long is your RPi running and who has the longest running Raspberry Pi?

Uptime is based on how long your RPi is connected to a power source and switched on so auto system reboot is acceptable. :)

mine is below:

RPi: Model B 512
OS: Raspbian Wheezy
Service/s: Transmission
Uptime: 9 Days and counting.

I've got one that's been on continuously since December last year, monitoring the temperatures in my central heating system (little rrd graphs on a web browser). Current uptime is 86 days but that's because we had a power failure in April and it rebooted.

I'm sure someone can beat that hands-down!

Liz posted recently that someone has had one running for a year, or something like that.

Not that hard when you consider how easy it is to battery-back one of these things.

My two biggest constraints on long uptimes are periodic software upgrades (usually every 2 to 3 months) and a headless Pi occasionally has its ethernet go down (anyone know a fix for that?). I think the most recent forced reboot for that latter was after a bit over 90 days.

It's about time I upgraded the software on the two I keep running anyway.

There is a cronjob for checking wlan here http://rpi.tnet.com/project/scripts/wifi_check that will auto connect whenever it lost its connection and I think this can be edited to work with ethernet.

The same for me and uptime as W.H. Heydt. Mine comes down for updates, backup and the occasional crash. These crashes are not due to the RasPi itself but due to brown outs from the local power company. The other cuase of any extended outage is from updating and the occasional bad update. Other than those caveats it has been running continuously since 8/25/12. That Raspberry Pi was taken down last week and replaced with a 512MB.

They can run stably for very long periods of time.

I now take it down for a backup before running updates. After the update it is backed up again. My uptime would be even better if I had my WordPress sever connected to a battery backup.

Finally getting around to trying out this script....and finding some peculiar coding and behavior.

First point is that it is using the --force flag on ifup. According to the man page on ifup, it doesn't take that flag. Is that an undocumented feature, ignored, or just wrong?

The problem I'm finding with it is a bit more complicated....

1. I run the Pis that I want this for with static IP addresses. That data is in /etc/network/interfaces (the default location).

2. If I manually do "ifdown --force eth0" followed by "ifup eth0", ifconfig shows the proper (i.e. static) IP address.

3. If I run "ifdown --force eth0" followed by the modified script "RJ45_Check" (modifications consist of name change and network ID change, plus removing the --force from ifup), I get what appears to be a DHCP-assigned IP address.

What gives?

One other note...so far as I can tell, in order to run this script from cron, it has to be run as root, so the specified permissions (755) are....overkill. They should probably be 744.

700.
And some folks need to stop being fanboys and see the forest behind the trees.

I would argue that, on a device intended for educational purposes, making as much source code (such as a script like this) publicly readable is desirable, hence 744 instead of 700.

Hi

Same here as mine only seems to die due to a power cut. The best I have had is 99 days continuous uptime ended by a recent thunderstorm causing a power failure. Mine is one of the original model Bs with the F1 & F2 fuses.

Cheers

My "development" system is at 88 days right now.

I need to update it soon, though, I think. Probably once I get that Ethernet restart script working.

Must power mine down tomorrow :(

uptime
10:37:57 up 268 days, 21:18, 9 users, load average: 0.65, 0.31, 0.26

Running a Java home automation app that talks to an x10 controller via a USB to serial cable. Part of a little network of four Raspis all running java apps (the other three run a maxim weatherstation monitor, fileserver/webserver and development) that communicate using a UDP datagrams. I think having each raspi do different jobs makes for a more reliable system - hence the uptime.

Needless to say, the big question is whether to update the kernel when I power it back up. There have been a lot of USB fixes since December, but on the other hand, 268 days uptime is pretty reliable.

Wow, that's pretty impressive. I was up to 73 days when a storm caused the power to go out at my house.

Uptime on one RPi 318 days with out any reboot, RISC OS 5.19 512MB Model B.

On another 327 days, though reboot everyday after recompiling the ROM image from source, RISC OS 5.21 512MB Model B.

I find this thread funny, for the following reason:

Long uptimes on Linux systems (including the Pi) shouldn't really be news. Stable OS running stable processes - you expect long uptimes.

This next (what I am about to report) should be considered interesting and newsworthy:
  • I have a WIndows XP system (in my living room, which hosts several shared hard disks and runs various processes relating to recording TV shows), with 423 days of uptime (!).
Incidentally, my Pi gets rebooted fairly frequently, most recently to update the kernel (as recommended in various threads about "SD card corruption"). Also, when I switch between OSes (raspbian vs. open ELEC, mostly)
And some folks need to stop being fanboys and see the forest behind the trees.

(One of the best lines I've seen on this board lately)

Agreed, even in the Windows 95 days I used to have a little Toshiba Libretto that would run for a year or more at a time - it was just used as a music player in my kitchen, so a pretty undemanding application.

Uptime boasting is pretty pointless with the raspi - it's so easy to run it from a battery backup, there shouldn't really be an excuse for the more fanatical of the first adopters to have one that's been up since almost Day 1. You're never going to catch up with them! :D

I'm keeping my RPi up as much as possible, but every time I want to play with GPIO or add a GPIO shield or update the kernel or update Raspbian or run RiscOS (or Pidora, or Arch, or XBMC) then it get a reboot (or even a power down).

If you don't want to see the white smoke of death then it's safer to shutdown before going anywhere near the pins.

I think the longest I've run it continuously is about a month. Since Xmas it's not been up for more than ten hours at a stretch.

If you add in the number of kernel updates and the move from Wheezy to Jessie (beta) it's going to be a while before it gets any long uptimes.

Libretto was a great machine, ahead of it's time - but let down by a tiny battery life.

Of course Windows 95 had that HILARIOUS bug that meant it would crash at 49.7 days uptime,
http://news.cnet.com/2100-1040-222391.html
I remember it being routine to schedule a reboot every 30 days on quite a few systems.

As for raspi uptime, my pi-in-the-loft has 223 days uptime - that's mainly used for torrents / file server,
others rarely left on - I still like to go round randomly switching plugs off before bed - hate leaving stuff on !
