So in general, we're looking at $20 for mouse + keyboard combo, and maybe $10-$20 for 2GB+ SD cards.

The 1A power brick seems excessive, since the R-Pi provisional specs assume ~1W draw, at 6-20V; at 6V, this should basically be 200mA or under. 5V 1A is a bit too much, unless you want to attach it to a power strip and run a small touchscreen display and a few other things.

Also, I'd much rather use a battery than a direct PSU to power the R-Pi. Considering its 200mA 6V consumption, a 7.4V 6Ah could run for, what, 30 hours straight?

Er... as for the hair cut thing.... is this some trick that people learn in their Economics class or something? Sorry, but it seems so random (and an amusingly simple yet effective method) that I feel like it really either is a joke, or is some kind of ancient wisdom. 8O

The 1W is for model A with nothing on USB. The alpha version was measured at 2.25W, but this may be higher than the production version. Also, each USB port can be asked for 2.5W. So 1A @ 7V is reasonable for a model B board.

The haircut I once read about. It is one of those thousands random snippet the brain stores just because it makes enough impact. In this case, as you said: so simple yet logical that became wedged in some of my neurons.

When i had business classes on college we used a similar method but instead of using the price of haircuts we used the prices from the basic menu at McDonalds :)

We (well, Gert) actually got quoted a price for a whole 20ft shipping container full of SD cards - they wouldn't sell fewer than that. That's a ship with a hell of a lot of bandwidth!
This may not apply to EU and North America, where shipping from single source will be cheaper.

Providing SD card with RaspberryPi will be O.K. but Key Board / Mouse is No! No! You need to turn volumes selling 1 20ft container full of MicroSD is no big deal even in a poor country with 100+ million population.

How many cards is a container ?
And can you mix and match ? I'm sure some would like the cheapest possible, and some bigger and/or faster ?

Plus.. you'll have fun imaging those... trainees anyone ? you got kids ? could the cat...

In Chile (Santiago):

A mouse: From $3.000 (a cheap chinese mouse)
Real mouse prices in a normal store: http://pcfactory.cl/?papa=304&.....tegoria=22
A USB keyboard: $4.000 (a cheap one)
Real world prices in a normal store: http://pcfactory.cl/?papa=304&.....tegoria=36
2GB SD card: $4.000 (2G is about to become obsolete, so you can buy a 4G for $5.000 or some)
Real world prices: http://pcfactory.cl/?papa=264&.....tegoria=48
A 5V Adaptor: $4.000/$4500 (based on http://www.olimex.cl/product_i.....cts_id=118 likely less but I don't know )

Haircut? Um an average price may be $3000

Today one dollar is equal to 466 CLP (Chilean peso)

Don't do it, honestly! I've worked for some of the tightest employers but never did they go so far as to provide cheap keyboards. Guess why! It simply doesn't make any sense in the long run. You want them to be used in schools, programming clubs etc? If you offer people a choice they in fact will buy the cheap keyboard. Then however they'll complain and knock the entire product. Besides you're aware of the fact that not everybody in the world uses a UK keyboard? Not only are there QUERTZ, ATZERY or whatever layouts but e.g. a swiss keyboard will have to speak German, French and Italian. Even the US keyboard differs from the UK version.

Seriously: I'd never consider a keyboard for less than 20 quid and I'm no snob!

In Cambridge (UK):

I found a mouse, keyboard and (surprisingly) a 5V PSU in the skip under my window at work. I suppose I'm fortunate to work somewhere techie.
