Re: How much is a local keyboard / mouse ...

Thu Aug 25, 2011 9:32 am

I am trying to asses what the total cost for the system would be in the various parts of the world. So how much does a USB-A keyboard and mouse ... cost in your local shop?
e.g. I did a quick internet check for the UK and I get about:
Mouse: £2.90 ~ $4.73
Keyboard: £3.30 ~ $5.38
2G SD-Card: £5.50 ~ $8.97
5V 1A supply: £8.50 ~ $13.85
Price of a hair cut: £11.00 ~$17.93

The last one is not a joke: it is a good indicator for the local price level as it takes about the same skill and time to get a hair cut all over the world.

Can we please stick to some rules:
A/ Please also provide the price in dollars. (Makes comparison easier)
B/ Two or three prices per country is enough
C/ Please no "It is a few cents cheaper at..." I am looking for an estimate.

First price is from regular, reputable online shop. Second price is from very cheap physical store, for the cheapest model

France
Keyboard: 13€ (5€)
Mouse: 6€ (5€)
2GB SD: 6€ (5€)
Power supply (6-19V): 17€ (4€)
Hair cut: 15€ (6€)

dont forget http://www.dealextreme.com ships anywhere in the world with no S/H charges. this puts a ceiling on prices, if you're in no hurry (1 month delivery): http://www.dealextreme.com/p/a.....240v-15991 for example.

this is actually why I was asking for power plug exact specs a handful of days back.

I am guessing "local store" is there for a reason. I think it would be incredibly foolish to actually buy anything at Dick Smith, but that's the kind of place where people who don't know about online shopping or swap meets would go.

If you throw online shopping into it, then the prices would be very similar globally.

Gert - there's a shop in the Grafton Centre in Cambridge which (at least of last week) was selling keyboards for £1.

As an aside, R.Pi should seriously consider trying to source the items that most people will need. 5V 1A PSUs can be purchased in 5k bulk for around $3.5/ea, for instance.

Might also be worth sourcing a budget keyboard with integral hub - something like trust or manhattan brand.

Yes, we will ship complete packets.
What I am trying to find out if it is worth it to some areas. My gut feeling is that it is more economical to buy a local keyboard e.g. in a big town in India then it is for us to ship them.

Well, it costs a kidney to ship to Australia from Europe and America. I don't know how much you can knock the price down by buying in bulk, but I am certain it will cost much cheaper to order from ebay if you consider the shipping costs.

It might be a good idea to have trusted, local distributors around the world. Then you can have the accessories like keyboards delivered to those countries directly rather than via UK.

Prices are directly related to the height of the skyscrapers....

In other news, I reckon you could get 4 Raspis for the price of one female haircut. Or do they call it styling?

We're looking at doing just that (which is part of what's keeping me so busy at the moment!)

I think by sourcing the right stuff, the R.Pi foundation can have excellently targeted stuff at a good price. For example,
- a compact keyboard with an integrated pointing device for all those model As. These are normally a fairly expensive specialty device (perixx 505 @ 30€ is the cheapest i could find) Maybe also indeed, with an integrated hub. (There's going to be a layout issue though, try and have regular-size keys so we can use stickers to localize the keyboards).
- Same for the case (a nice case goes a long way, especially when it's red !), tinkering for a case will turn off lots of people, and having a custom one made is horrendously expensive
- PSU prices can be extortionate (have fun with all the different plugs).
- I don't know about SD cards.

I'm not sure the extra S&H costs will be that much, especially if you re-pack for optimization.

We (well, Gert) actually got quoted a price for a whole 20ft shipping container full of SD cards - they wouldn't sell fewer than that. That's a ship with a hell of a lot of bandwidth!
