Will Raspberry Pi do the job? Plus Bonus Questions

Sun Jun 16, 2013 11:21 am

I play minecraft. And I love the raspberry Pi. Such a neat little gadget!
I was thinking of turning the Raspberry Pi into a Minecraft Server. I found MCServer, a C++ minecraft server which apparently only uses about a fraction of the official server's resources :D . Ideally I will have the server open for the whole summer, headless. And I won't be always there for the pi. By the time that this occurred to me, I was thinking of every possible worst case scenario. What if the power goes down or the Pi for some reason stops working? What would happen there? Unsure, I settled for a backup plugin for the server.
//1st Question: Is there any cloud service that will let me upload the backups online, so that a friend of mine can reclaim them? Something noob-friendly would be ideal.//
//2nd Question: Can I have something like this?//
//3rd Question: Maybe adding a torrent client to the mix?//
In addition, in case of failure, it should restart...
So...
What are your thoughts?

Lastly, sorry for the title!

I hoped that that I'd find more specific answers if I were to open a new thread...

I suppose it would depend on how many users you have connected to your MC server. Running a torrent client could cause problems depending on how busy it was, but I can't really say because I don't torrent with my pi. I'm sure you could set up a script to pause all torrents while people were connected to you MC server, but I don't know how to make that happen.

Firewalls scale up in CPU useage depending on the rules you set so no one could answer that. If the only thing you are protecting is the Pi I don't see the point. If you are plugging in a second USB NIC and using it to protect your whole network then I would say there is probably not going to be enough resources to protect your whole network and run a MC server.

that seems like alot of stuff for one pi. Maybe a bbb (beagle bone black) would work better for this? (It has better ethernet and a faster cpu)
