So...it's 10k boards being produced in the first batch? and we have 6K members?...just when I thought the limit of 1 board per person was a bit conservative, we may actually not get one if it keeps going at this rate LOL

So, with beta #6 going for an amazing £1000 pounds, its looking like there's no stopping the onward progress of the Raspberry Pi phenomemon!

A long time ago, (August 18th to be exact) we were all cheering on the fact that the forum had topped 500 members and as half the beta Pi's have gone on eBay, its amazing to note that the forum is nudging 7000 members.

All I can say is congratulations to the Foundation and well done!

We've reached 17th January, and the forum member count is up to 8033. Its put on 100 within a day (I think) and over 1000 in 8 days.  HOW many Pi's are in the first batch?

That was a rhetorical question...

Its a racing cert that the first batch is going to be well oversubscribed!

I for one would not complain if the foundation were to reserve the first 500 boards for those first 500 forum members. It couldn't be done for all of us, but 500 boards is not going to make a significant dent in the number available and it would be a nice nod to the members that have been here for the long slog.

The membership is heading towards 10K soon. As of now it is 8629. I wonder how many guests are lurking...

This is great, but it also needs to be considered for planning of manufacture. There is a very good chance that the first 10K production run should sell out instantly. How to plan for the next production run?

I assume that the first production run will be eaten up by hackers and educational enthusiasts, the "Raspberry Pioneers". How can we predict when all of the pioneers have been provided for? The manufacturing predictions must be based upon sustainable demand, and this sustainable demand is the intended end-user, not the pioneer.

The major risk is that the foundation could plan larger and larger production runs. And then when all of the pioneers have been satisfied, there may be a sudden drop in demand.

One possible solution is for the shop to ask the user why they are buying the Raspi. In this way, the demand from pioneers could be separated from demand from end-users. This would facilitate much better production planning.

And you hit a very big nail on the head. How many will be sold....who knows! Prudence in batch sizes, I think, is a very necessary thing to have.

I expect a huge number to be sold, and the demand to be far greater than will be produced over the coming months.

But, it all takes lots of money (and a large risk), up front to meet huge demands, so it'll have to take time instead before that demand is met.

My hope is that once the design is proven, and the boards are in the wild that some of the following could happen:

a) The foundation will take some larger orders by independent distributors and companies wanting them for internal use.  This will hopefully allow larger capital to be used for bigger and bigger batches.

b) Manufacturing Partners are taken on, where the foundation supply what is needed except the capital to do it (assuming they can get the SoCs out of broadcom in suitable numbers).

c) or (when plans are released) Genuine Clones are produced, so someone else can produce as many boards as they wish.

Who knows how it'll pan out.

Don't be disheartened. Not everybody on the forum is a potential customer. You need to remember the trollers, the hangers-on, and the kids with no credit cards.

Also, a significant proportion may have amnesia and registered multiple times. I hope I didn't but I can't remember.

Since we are coming up on 15500 members (There are 15456 Members) I thought I'd revisit this venerable thread one more time.  15500 actual members!  That was definitely a fantasy figure back in August.

So it grows!

It seems like almost no time at all we were coming up on 500 members. I noticed yesterday that during a recent peak period we have 1466 people on the forum AT THE SAME TIME.

And the vast majority are well behaved and polite - thanks!
