What size screw driver for Philips and bolts do I need?

Tue Apr 27, 2021 1:14 am

That would be useful for my projects, also what brand is good in the UK?
Nothing too expensive.

Not sure what to start with, hope it's ok to ask on here.

Kind regards

Edit: I mean in general, I have kits of tanks etc and not very good screws. I think EDS screwdrivers would be great but in Bit set from. Could someone link me a set (if I am allowed) under £80. If it's not too much to ask.

Unless you have special requirements I suggest you get screw drivers to fit the size of the screws you have.

As for phillips heads, no two seem alike. I have quite an assortment, some to fat or small, some too deep or shallow. It's a crap shoot. you just try until it fits.
I think 2.5 mm is pretty standard on the RPi but I could be wrong. Length just depends on the parts.

That would be because Phillips head screws have a few different sizes. Instead of trying until it fits, you select the correct head size and design for the screw you have.

Regarding the Raspberry Pi, the holes are about 2.8mm metric and are designed to fit M2.5 bolts or screws, but are perfectly safe to drill out to 3mm to fit M3 size

Is there anyone who actually does that? :)

Typically one has a screw to insert/remove and no idea what size it is exactly. One has a box of screw drivers of random and unknown sizes. One just has to take a guess and pick a suitable tool. Pick again if that does not work out nicely.

Or one selects the required lenght and size from his box of screws, knowing which driver one needs (as. There are nice tables which tell it).

Becoming more simple if one is using i.e. TORX in favour of Philips heads.

Holes are for M2.5 (as said already) but I'm using M3 more often (drilling them to 3.2mm)

I just look at the screw head and select a suitable driver from my set - it isn't hard.

I think you will find most screws used on computer systems these days are Pozidriv - easily distinguished because they have parallel flanks and the screws have radial indentations.

The holes on Pi boards are M2.5 (which are relatively uncommon), but they are not designed for mounting screws, but as part of the manufacturing process.

As it is in 'General discussion', it fits well enough; I need some small screwdrivers myself when using external drive enclosures & the like. 8-)

sorry, but I would like to hear your explanation of this statement, hearing you explaining why one would need the 4 2.8mm holes during manufacturing process.

BTW The correct spelling is "Phillips". No connection to the Philips lighting and electronics company that is now only a shadow of its former glory.

Get a Poundland screwdriver with 5 interchangeable heads for £1.
That’s what I use - oh and a set of precision screwdrivers, and a Draper set with torx and security bits, and various others...

Not enough relevance to Raspberry PI's for the general discussion topic, so moving to off topic.

I buy quite a few tools (big and small), and am generally impressed by the stuff from Lidl or Aldi. Got a set of screwdrivers from one of them that is surprisingly good and wide ranging. Also have a two year warranty.

Whilst I cannot prove that they are not used for that I can express my doubt that they must be 2.8 mm to serve that purpose. I can also state without fear of contradiction that the assembly and testing of the original RPis was successfully accomplished despite the boards having no mounting holes.

I agree. The original boards had no holes. The next revision had two oddly located holes which were used for an alignment jig - although many people, including myself, used them as mounting holes.

The later models all had four evenly spaced holes, which while they may be used for alignment, are almost certainly intended for use as mounting holes. The fact that HATs have matching holes for fixing is a case in point.

Not to mention the Pi's are not manufactured one at a time, but in a large pcb sheet and snapped off from each other.

may well be, although I see no evidence of snap off points or V-cuts on the RPI's I have, but I can guarantee you that raspberry PI's will be individually tested in a test rig, and that test right WILL use the mounting holes for alignment with the needle-bed.

from the source I found:
the size of the drivers for the (+) screw usually used in RPi setups.
PH1 for both M2.5 and M3.
PH0 for M2 and M1.6
