Wow. Some might remember that I was recently asking about e-book texts on electronics and circuitry; I"ve since been working through the Openbook reference I was given. Now I read on the BBC news site about MITx, which purports to be providing online MIT courses—starting with electronics and circuitry—free, and available worldwide. They mention some form of certification, too, though what its worth will be I have no idea; I"ll just be in it for the learning.
Apparently the first course will run from March 5th. I"ll be extremely interested to see how this—and hopefully other such things—develop.

Re: MITx
Oh? Why, out of interest?
Re: MITx
I think tjz is referring to
"Although there are no formal entry requirements, ...
students will need to have a knowledge of maths and science."
statement in the article
10+10 Thats both socks off now!

Ah, right. For some reason I thought he was talking about the videos themselves, rather than the contents. I should be OK; my degree was maths, so I can usually get the forum post sums right on the second or third attempt

Shees! learn how to count to twelve on one hand and a gross on two. It's why the clock has 12 hour cycles.

Re: MITx
I may have to go through those TBH, matrix calculations mess with my head a bit, saying that long division is still something am not fond of.
I MAY pass this through the skin of my teeth, but its worth a shot, its free after all
in regards to the textbook, a thousand pages of mostly raw brain juice from the start does and will take a while to settle-in. I"ve managed to skim through the first 30 pages in an hour and the lack of diagrams scare me... must get used to that :/
anyway... Bad Wolf was right
oh and I"m just pointing this out, my optimism and realism do get twisted at the best of times so there"s a good chance I"ll end up failing it. =s

If the RPi does as well as I hope, we may even get a tranche of kids who can count to 31 on one hand; 1023 on both!

Not forgetting that they also say
"In order to succeed in this course, you must have taken an AP level physics course in electricity and magnetism"
and looking it up on wikipedia that is quite a high level background knowledge.

Re: MITx
people should be getting started with this now, I"ve done the homework and lab for this week, and the lab for next week... I may be doing the math the long way round but eventually got them right.
