What to do with a Amiga A500+?

Sun Jan 06, 2013 1:43 am

My Dad grabbed a Amiga A500+ from some dude at the dump throwing it out. He gave it to me and it seems to work just fine. Has original power supply and mouse, but no boot disk/s so can't do anything on it. It boots and I get a floppy image via the "mono" port on the back hooked up with a RCA cable to my TV. A few websites said that even though it has a floppy drive a PC computer can not make a floppy disk that is compatible with the Amiga so I can't even download and make boot disks with one of my old desktop computers that has a floppy drive and one of the old floppies I have laying around.

With no boot disk/s is this thing just a paper weight or worth something?

Can a Raspberry Pi be interfaced with the motherboard and load code on boot?

If you're interested on making floppies for it, you'd need a standard floppy drive (a pc one is fine) and kryoflux:

http://www.kryoflux.com/
http://www.softpres.org/

Then you can recreate all the floppies you need/want from any amiga floppy disk images out there. Also look into:

Of course, there's always cheaper alternatives. Try IRC, forums and such and you can probably find yourself a person with an Amiga which can get you started. As long as you have a serial cable, with little software (you're gonna need somebody to at least copy the AmigaOS 1.3 and/or 2.04 floppies into actual floppies using an Amiga or kryoflux), you can pretty much copy disk images to the Amiga and write any further floppy yourself.

For games (I'm thinking those that have been made freeware by their authors) and such, you'll need unprotected versions (eg: ADF images from TOSEC, as opposed to collections in the IPF format softpres uses) as you won't be able to write the special anticopy disk formats using the Amiga itself.
