Need an opinion - Do I need added HW?

Does Raspberry Pi need external hardware?
Can it perform/function to its fullest without external hardware support?

Hi.

I would say it depends upon what you want to do with your pi.

for example

If you want to be able to use the pi as a stand alone PC you would need PSU , micro SD card, keyboard , mouse and a display.
( possibly a LAN cable if using a wired connection to a network )

If you just wanted to be able to boot the pi and then access it from another PC via ssh or VNC then you would only need PSU and micro SD card
( possibly a LAN cable if using a wired connection )

whether either of these is using a pi to its fullest is a matter of opinion and the use it is to be put to.

Your question is too open ended, without more detail as to what you want to do with your pi.

This is a bizarre question. What do you mean "to its fullest"?

Of course a Pi needs power as every computer does. If we want to count that as "external hardware support".

And of course it needs some means of input and output. Else it is of no use except for heating. Like every computer.

Optionally you can use it like a desktop computer with the addition of screen, keyboard and mouse. None of my Pi have those.

You can get data in and out via ethernet, so you will need an ethernet cable and something to connect it to. None of my Pi use ethernet.

You can get data in and out via WiFi or even Bluetooth. No hardware required. Except of course whatever they are communicating with. That is what my Pi use.

And of course, you can get data in via serial ports, other USB gadgets, or SPI or I2C or GPIO bit banging. Optional up to you.

So what do you want to do with your Pi?
Memory in C++ is a leaky abstraction .

Your Pi will also need something to hold the files required to boot and run, so most Pis also need a microSD card. However, that can be dispensed with if you do a network book (Pi2Bv1.2, Pi3B, or later) or some other device--USB stick, HDD, SSD--may be substituted as the boot device.

So, without any sort of special set up, the bare minimum is a PSU and a microSD card, depending on intended use.

Perhaps if you were to tell us what you want to do, more specific advice could be provided.

If you are going to work it really hard then some sort of cooling may be desirable, heat won't destroy it but it can slow it down because of throttling.

Yes, how much and what you need depends on the specific tasks you want to do.

No, it's just a bare-bones system board that won't do anything on it's own. If you took the motherboard out of a Windows or Mac PC and unplugged everything connected to it, would it do anything?

Pi computers are similar. You'll need a power supply and storage device with an operating system at the very least.

Since the OP has not returned to read any of these answers, I suggest people don't bother replying any further - we are just repeating ourselves to no avail.

Three very nice pieces of HW.
